Chapter 11 - The Deposition of Ice

The pre-trial hearing took place in Room 304 of the County Courthouse—a solemn chamber of dark walnut paneling and high stained-glass windows.
Victoria sat at the defense table beside her high-priced legal defense team. She was dressed in an orange jumpsuit, her hair neatly combed, trying desperately to project an aura of calm, misunderstood elegance.
Her attorney stood up to deliver his opening argument regarding bail reduction. "Your Honor, my client is a respected business owner with no prior criminal record. The allegations made by her former employees are based on circumstantial digital evidence and the unreliable testimony of a traumatized minor child—"
"Your Honor," Prosecutor Rachel Adams interrupted, standing up from the prosecution table. "The state requests permission to play the physical evidence recovered from the scene."
Judge Henderson nodded. "Proceed."
A large television screen rolled out in front of the jury box flickered to life.
The video played the internal security footage from the Haven Crest Bistro kitchen corridor. The clear 4K video showed everything: Toby striking the door handle with the iron pipe, Victoria commanding Mark to take the boy home, the cold fog bursting from the freezer door, and finally—unmistakably—Victoria slamming the heavy freezer door shut and sliding an iron bar through the padlock handle while smiling calmly into the camera.
The audio was crisp and unyielding. Victoria's voice echoed through the high-ceilinged courtroom: 'A tragic accident... an equipment malfunction. Such a shame about the whole family.'
Gasps of horror echoed from the gallery. Two members of the grand jury turned their heads away in disgust.
Victoria’s attorney slumped into his chair, shutting his binder without a word.

Judge Henderson leaned forward, his face dark with moral outrage as he looked down at Victoria. "Bail is denied. The defendant will remain in custody until trial."
Victoria’s hands began to shake violently as the bailiffs stepped forward to escort her back to the holding cells. For the first time, the cold, impenetrable mask she wore shattered entirely, revealing the hollow, terrified predator underneath.
