Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Horizon

The sun began its slow descent into the Pacific Ocean, painting the evening sky in brilliant layers of orange, rose, and deep gold. The ocean waves lapped rhythmically against the sandy shore, reflecting the warm colors of the dusk.
Mark, Lucy, and Toby walked along the water's edge. The red kite soared high into the sky, its long tail dancing gracefully against the clouds as Toby ran along the sand, laughing as the sea breeze caught his hair.
Lucy leaned her head against Mark’s shoulder as they walked behind him, their hands intertwined tightly.
"Look how high it goes, Mommy!" Toby yelled back over the sound of the surf, holding the string reel firmly in his small hands.
"I see it, sweetie!" Lucy called back, her face radiant with happiness. "Keep holding on!"
Mark stopped, pulling Lucy close into his side, watching their son run free along the endless beach. The dark hallway, the rusty iron pipe, the clanging steel handle, and the choking sub-zero fog had faded into a distant memory—a test of fire and ice that their family had not only survived, but conquered.
