THE GILDED CAGE OF SILENCE / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - The Defense's Gambit

When the defense's turn came, Julian’s lead attorney, Richard Sterling—a veteran lawyer known for dismantling prosecution witnesses—stood up slowly. He adjusted his gold cufflinks and walked toward the witness stand where Meilin was now seated.

"Mrs. Thorne," Sterling began, his voice soft, almost sympathetic—a tactical maneuver designed to make him appear gentle while planting seeds of doubt. "You testified earlier that you felt imprisoned in your home. Is that correct?"

"Yes," Meilin replied clearly, holding her head high.

"And yet," Sterling pulled a stack of documents from his briefcase, "financial records show that during the three years of your marriage, you held three separate credit cards in your name with a total limit exceeding one hundred thousand dollars. You made frequent trips to day spas, high-end boutiques, and luxury resorts. Is that correct?"

"Julian controlled the statements," Meilin explained smoothly. "If I spent money on anything he didn't approve of, he would cut off access immediately."

"Direct access, perhaps," Sterling smiled subtly, turning to face the jury. "But you were free to leave the apartment at any time, weren't you? You had keys. You had a driver."

"I had a driver who reported my every movement to him," Meilin countered, her voice dropping into a solemn, powerful cadence. "And I had a husband who told me that if I ever tried to take my daughter and leave, he would use his wealth to ensure I was declared an unfit mother and never saw my child again."

A silence fell over the courtroom. Several jurors nodded slowly, their eyes shifting back to Julian with renewed distaste.

Sterling narrowed his eyes. He realized his gentle approach wasn't breaking her. He decided to play his dangerous card.

"Mrs. Thorne, let's talk about Arthur Vance," Sterling said, stepping closer to the witness box. "Isn't it true that you were secretly meeting with Mr. Vance for three months prior to Mr. Thorne’s arrest? Isn't it true that you provided him with proprietary corporate codes from your husband's personal computer?"

"I provided him with proof of illegal wire fraud to protect my family," Meilin said firmly.

"Or did you provide him with those files because Arthur Vance promised you a ten percent finder's fee from the SEC whistleblower bounty program?" Sterling shot back loudly. "A bounty that could net you upwards of five million dollars?"

The courtroom erupted into quiet murmurs.

Julian leaned back in his chair at the defense table, a subtle, triumphant smirk touching the corners of his lips.
