THE GILDED CAGE OF SILENCE / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - The Safehouse

While Julian sat in the interrogation room, Meilin was sitting in a small, windowless medical examination room at Saint Jude's Women's Hospital.

An obstetrician had just completed an ultrasound. The rhythmic, echoing sound of her unborn baby's heart—thump-thump, thump-thump—filled the quiet room, a steady beacon of life amidst the wreckage of her world.

"The baby is fine, Mrs. Thorne," the doctor said gently, wiping the clear gel from Meilin's belly. "No signs of placental abruption. Your blood pressure is high, which is expected given the trauma, but the child is resilient."

Meilin let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for years. She pulled her silk dress back down over her stomach and sat up slowly.

Lily was fast asleep on a small vinyl cot in the corner of the room, wrapped in a warm hospital blanket, holding a teddy bear given to her by an emergency room nurse.

Arthur stepped into the room, closing the door quietly behind him. He carried two paper cups of hot tea and handed one to Meilin.

"The district attorney just called," Arthur said, taking a seat on a plastic chair near the examination table. "Julian’s high-powered defense attorneys are already at the precinct. They're trying to post a two-million-dollar cash bail and arguing that he isn't a flight risk."

Meilin’s hand trembled, spilling a drop of hot tea onto her lap. "If he gets out tonight..."

"He won't," Arthur assured her firmly. "The FBI filed a federal detainer. Even if the state judge grants bail on the domestic assault charge, the Feds are taking him into custody immediately for financial fraud and witness tampering. He isn't going home tonight, Meilin. Or tomorrow."

Meilin looked down at her cup, watching the tea leaves swirl in the hot water. "He won't stop, Arthur. You don't know him like I do. Julian doesn't accept losing. He views people as possessions. If he can't control me, he'll destroy me."

May you like

"He can't destroy you if he's behind bars," Arthur said softly. "You did the right thing tonight. You saved your life, and you saved Lily's."

"I didn't save us," Meilin whispered, looking over at her sleeping daughter in the yellow dress. "Lily did. She opened that door."
