Chapter 4 - The Unlocking

Julian was too focused on suffocating Meilin's cries to realize what his daughter was doing until he heard the soft sound of small bare feet pattering rapidly across the marble floor.
He snapped his head around. "Lily! Stop!"
It was too late. Lily reached the massive dark wooden door. The smart lock was positioned high for an adult, but the mechanical lower latch—the manual override lever installed for emergency child safety exit—was positioned lower down, precisely at three feet.
With both her tiny hands, Lily reached up. She grabbed the metal lever, her small fingers straining, and pulled down with all her weight.
CLACK-CLICK.
The heavy multi-point electronic lock system disengaged. The glowing blue light on the exterior panel flashed red, indicating an emergency manual release.
Julian’s eyes dilated with pure panic. "NO!" he screamed, abandoning his hold on Meilin. He threw himself off the sofa, scrambling across the slick floor toward the entrance.
Meilin gasped violently, tearing cold air into her burning lungs. She collapsed onto her side on the sofa, coughing violently, her vision swimming as oxygen rushed back into her brain. Through her blurred sight, she saw the massive oak door swing inward with sudden, violent force.
Arthur Vance stood on the threshold.
He was in his late fifties, his salt-and-pepper hair disheveled, sweat glistening on his forehead. He wore a heavy dark blue trench coat over a wrinkled grey business suit. His face was flushed red from exertion, his chest heaving as he held a heavy steel crowbar in his right hand.
As the door opened, Arthur saw the layout of the living room in a single, terrifying snapshot: the toddler in the yellow dress backing away toward the wall; Meilin curled up on the sofa clutching her throat, her face swollen; and Julian, charging toward the doorway like a cornered animal.
"Get out of my house!" Julian roared, reaching for the door edge to slam it shut again.
Arthur didn't hesitate. He stepped across the threshold, raised his left arm, and slammed his heavy shoulder straight into Julian's chest. The impact sounded like a hollow drum. Julian stumbled back, his polished shoes losing traction on the smooth marble, and crashed into the side of the glass coffee table.
The glass shattered into a thousand gleaming shards. Julian fell among the debris, cursing loudly as sharp pain sliced through his forearm.
"Meilin!" Arthur shouted, stepping over Julian’s sprawling form and placing himself squarely between the younger man and the family. "Get the girl! Get out of here!"
Meilin didn't need to be told twice. Driven by a surge of pure maternal instinct that bypassed all physical pain, she pushed herself off the sofa, scooped Lily into her arms, and backed toward the hallway exit.

Julian was already scrambling to his feet among the broken glass, his hands bleeding, his eyes glowing with an unhinged, feral fury. "You think you can take her from me, Arthur? You think you can take anything from me?"
"It's over, Julian," Arthur said, holding the heavy steel crowbar in front of him with two hands, his voice icy and breathless. "The police aren't just coming because of a domestic disturbance. They're coming because of the offshore accounts. I gave the District Attorney everything this morning."
