Chapter 6 - Escalation

Arthur swung the crowbar in a wide, defensive arc, but Julian was younger, faster, and driven by a desperate rage. Julian ducked beneath the swinging steel, hit Arthur around the waist, and drove the older man back against the dark mahogany wall paneling.

The force of the collision rattled the brass wall sconces. Arthur let out a gasp of air as his breath was knocked out of him. The crowbar clattered to the marble floor, ringing like a death knell.

"Run, Meilin! Run!" Arthur yelled, wrestling to keep Julian’s fingers away from his throat.

Meilin didn't hesitate. She turned toward the open hallway, holding Lily securely on her hip. But as she stepped through the door frame into the public corridor, she heard the sound of footsteps echoing up the concrete stairwell at the end of the hall.

For a terrifying second, she thought Julian had security guards stationed downstairs. She froze, her back pressed against the cold wallpaper of the high-rise hallway, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.

The heavy fire exit door at the end of the corridor burst open.

Two uniformed police officers, weapons drawn, rushed into the hallway. "Police! Don't move!" one of them shouted, his flashlight beam slicing through the dim hallway lighting.

"In here! Help us!" Meilin screamed at the top of her lungs, pointing back toward the open doorway of Penthouse 4B.

The officers didn't pause. They rushed past her, their heavy boots thumping against the carpeted floor. The lead officer took a position at the doorframe, his sidearm raised. "Police department! Put your hands up! Separate now!"

Inside the apartment, the sight of blue uniforms and gun barrels finally broke the spell of Julian’s rage. He released his grip on Arthur’s collar and backed away slowly, raising his hands, his bloodied palms open and visible.

"Officers, thank God," Julian said, his voice instantly shifting into a smooth, calculated tone of panicked panic—the performance of a victim. "Thank God you're here. This man broke into my home. He attacked me with a iron bar. Look at my hands! Look at my living room!"

Arthur slumped against the wall, coughing violently, holding his bruised ribs. "Don't listen to him... check the woman... check his wife..."

The second officer stepped into the apartment, looking between the bleeding billionaire, the bruised elderly man, and then out into the hall where Meilin stood holding her crying child, her face clearly marked by severe physical violence.

The officer's eyes locked onto the deep red bruise on Meilin's cheek, then moved down to her pregnant abdomen.

"Sir," the officer said to Julian, his tone cold and unyielding, "step away from the gentleman and get down on your knees. Right now."
