Chapter 12 - The Scalpel and the Fire

The living room transformed into a bloody, frantic surgical theatre.
The paramedics dragged the long mahogany coffee table into the center of the room, throwing a heavy white sterile surgical drape over its surface. They lifted Elena off the sofa, placing her onto the table beneath the harsh, blinding glare of two portable LED medical lights.
"Administering ten milligrams of midazolam!" Harrison shouted, his gloved hands tearing open a sterile surgical pack. "Preparing the abdomen with iodine!"
Elena lay on her back, the cold orange liquid being rubbed frantically across her belly. The oxygen mask covered her mouth, fogging up with her shallow, rapid breaths. Her vision was failing, reducing the room to a blurry composition of harsh white light, dark blue uniforms, and Marcus’s blood-stained face hovering directly above her.
Marcus was kneeling by her head. He had taken both of her hands in his, pressing them against his mouth, his tears finally breaking through his stoic composure, falling hot and fast onto her cold fingers.
"Elena... stay with me, please..." he wept, his voice breaking completely. "I'm sorry... God, Elena, I'm so sorry... I was blind... I was so blind..."
Elena looked up at him through her heavy, drooping eyelids.
She could feel the cold bite of the scalpel pressing against her lower abdomen—a distant, sharp pressure that signaled the beginning of the end. She didn't have the strength to speak, to forgive him, or to condemn him.
She gathered every remaining drop of her willpower, forcing her right hand to flex, pressing the small metallic cylinder hidden inside her sleeve into Marcus’s palm.
Marcus felt the cold metal object. He pulled his hand back slightly, looking down at the small digital voice recorder resting in his blood-covered palm.
The small LCD screen was lit up in faint green text.
