Chapter 13 - The Trial of the Lens

While the surgical team fought for two lives in the living room, Marcus walked like a dead man walking down the dark, quiet corridor toward his private study.

His tuxedo was ruined, stiff with dried blood. His hands were covered in iodine and red smears. In his right hand, he held the small digital voice recorder. In his left, his master security keycard.

He pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of his study.

Victoria was sitting in the corner armchair, guarded by a massive, silent security officer standing at the door. Her red velvet dress was wrinkled, her dark makeup smeared across her cheeks, but her face had hardened back into a cold, defiant mask of arrogance.

"Marcus," she said coldly, not standing up. "You're making a terrible mistake. My father’s attorneys are already on their way. When they see how I was treated, how your security shoved me—"

Marcus ignored her entirely.

He walked over to his grand oak desk, sat down in his leather chair, and inserted his security keycard into the side of his primary computer terminal. He opened the estate’s closed-circuit surveillance matrix.

Victoria watched him, her lip curling slightly. "Search all you want, Marcus. Your wife attacked me in the dark. There are no witnesses."

Marcus didn't reply. His fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard, entering his administrator credentials, bypassing the local storage buffer, and pulling up the real-time cloud archive for CAM-04: Grand Dining Area.

He selected the timestamp: 23:15:00.

He hit play.

The high-definition monitor illuminated his dark face with a cool, blue glow.

Victoria leaned forward slightly, curiosity flickering in her dark eyes. "What... what is that?"

Marcus turned the heavy twenty-seven-inch monitor around, facing it directly toward the armchair where Victoria sat.

On the screen, in crystal-clear, sixty-frame-per-second 4K resolution, the scene played out.

They watched Elena walk peacefully into the frame, her white silk nightgown moving softly around her ankles. They watched Victoria step out from the shadows, her red dress gleaming under the chandelier light. They heard every word—amplified by the recorder in Marcus’s hand, which he synced to the video feed.

"You thought you could just take everything, didn't you, Elena?" Victoria’s recorded voice echoed through the high-ceilinged study, cold, psychotic, and loud. "Let him die. Let him rot inside you just like you rotted my life!"

They watched the push. They watched the glass shatter. They watched Elena fall through the table. And they watched Victoria methodically tear her own dress and scratch her own skin.

Victoria’s face drained of every last drop of color. Her jaw dropped open, her eyes widening until they looked like they would burst from her sockets.

"No..." Victoria whispered, her voice shrinking into a pathetic, squeaking gasp. "No... that... that camera wasn't... there was no camera there..."

Marcus stood up slowly from his desk.
