Chapter 5 - The Perversion of Truth

"Marcus! Oh God, Marcus!" Victoria wailed, her voice cracking with engineered, masterclass agony.
She did not rush toward him. Instead, she crawled backward on her knees, her hands trembling wildly as she pointed a finger at the helpless woman on the floor.
"She attacked me!" Victoria screamed, her chest convulsing with frantic sobs. "I came down to get a glass of water... she was standing here in the dark, Marcus! She was screaming about you... about the contract... she said I was trying to steal you from her!"
Marcus did not move. His face, usually a mask of impenetrable corporate calm, paled dramatically. His gray eyes darted rapidly across the room—from the shattered glass table to the torn red velvet dress, to the deep scratches on Victoria’s chest, and finally down to his wife lying in her own blood.
"She went crazy, Marcus!" Victoria’s voice rose to a crescendo of hysterical terror. "She grabbed the heavy silver vase... she threw herself at me! I tried to hold her back, I swear to God I tried to calm her down, but she grabbed my hair and shoved me against the table! We both fell... the glass broke... I didn't mean for her to fall, Marcus! She tried to kill me!"
Elena listened to the horrifying stream of lies, her mind reeling in absolute disbelief. The sheer audacity of the lie was suffocating. It was a perfect, calculated strike—utilizing Marcus’s own pre-existing doubts about her psychological stability during the late stages of her high-risk pregnancy.
"Marcus..." Elena gasped, her voice barely audible above the ringing in her own ears. She reached one blood-stained hand out toward him, her fingers flexing weakly in the air. "No... Marcus... don't listen to her... she pushed me... she did this..."
Marcus took three slow, heavy steps into the room. His Italian leather boots crunched sharply over the layer of shattered glass.
He stopped five feet away from where Elena lay. From his towering perspective, looking down from his six-foot-two vantage point, the scene looked chaotic, bloody, and entirely irrational.
He looked down at Elena. His face was unreadable—a terrifying blank slate carved from stone.
"Marcus, look at my face!" Victoria wept from the corner, pulling herself up against the mahogany sideboard, displaying the bleeding cut on her forehead and the scratch marks on her neck. "She snapped! I told you she wasn't stable! I told you she was obsessed with the idea that I was trying to take her place!"
Elena stared up into her husband’s eyes, searching desperately for a single spark of trust, a single flicker of the love he had promised her under the oak trees nine months ago.
"Marcus... please," Elena wept, fresh tears spilling down her bloody cheeks. "Our baby... he's coming... I need a doctor... please, Marcus, look at me... look at me!"
Marcus’s jaw clenched tightly. A muscle in his cheek twitched once, twice. His gray eyes flickered with a dark, tempestuous storm of emotions—shock, rage, betrayal, and a deep, agonizing confusion.

He did not kneel down to hold her. He did not rush to scoop her out of the broken glass.
He simply stood there, paralyzed by the weight of two conflicting realities, looking down at his bleeding wife as if she were a stranger he had never known.
