Chapter 14 - The Cry in the Silence

He did not raise his hand. He did not scream. He did not rush at her with the rage of a wronged husband.
Marcus Blackwood walked toward Victoria with the slow, terrifying momentum of a glacier sliding down a mountain. His gray eyes were entirely dead—void of mercy, void of humanity, void of anything resembling the man she had tried so desperately to own.
"It was installed three months ago," Marcus said, his voice a low, flat monotone that made the security guard at the door take a involuntary step back. "To protect my family."
He stood over her chair, looking down at the shivering, pale woman in the ruined red velvet dress.
"Do you know what happens now, Victoria?" Marcus whispered.
Victoria cowered back into the leather cushions, her hands trembling wildly as she tried to cover her face. "Marcus... please... I loved you... I did it for us... she was taking you away from me—"
"You are going to prison," Marcus said, his words falling like iron weights onto her chest. "Not a comfortable private facility. Not a country club detention center paid for by your father’s money. I will personally spend every single dollar in the Blackwood treasury to ensure you are prosecuted for attempted double homicide."
He turned his head slightly toward the security guard.
"Call the state police," Marcus ordered. "Give them this video file. Tell them to bring handcuffs."
Before Victoria could scream, a sudden, sharp sound cut through the heavy silence of the estate.
It came from the living room down the hall.
It was not a scream of agony. It was not the sound of breaking glass or shouting doctors.
It was a sharp, high-pitched, furious cry—the loud, vibrant, unmistakable wail of a newborn baby taking his very first breath of air.

Marcus stopped. His entire body shivered.
He turned away from Victoria without another glance, pushing past the security guard, and ran down the corridor toward the living room as fast as his legs could carry him.
