Chapter 11 - The Unraveling Facade

Judge Harrison didn't look impressed by the defense attorney's smooth speech. She adjusted her glasses, peering down over the bench at the defense table.

"Mr. Counsel," Judge Harrison said dryly. "Are you aware that the prosecution has submitted forensic analysis of the video footage conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Digital Evidence Unit?"

The defense attorney paused, his condescending smile faltering slightly. "Your Honor, we have not yet had time to review—"

"The FBI analysis," Judge Harrison interrupted, her voice like iron, "confirms that the video files recovered from the hidden storage drive in the defendant's private cloud server are authentic, unedited, and timestamped in real-time."

She picked up a thick blue folder from her desk.

"Furthermore," the judge continued, "the grand jury has returned a superseding indictment this morning. In addition to seven counts of felony child abuse and two counts of obstruction of justice... the grand jury has formally indicted Evelyn Vance for the first-degree murder of Sarah Vance."

A collective gasp exploded across the courtroom.

Reporters scrambled for their notebooks. Camera shutters clicked frantically from the press gallery near the doors.

Evelyn’s defense attorney turned slowly to look at his client, his face suddenly pale. "Evelyn... you told me the murder charge was off the table..."

Evelyn didn't answer her lawyer.

She slowly turned her head, her ice-blue eyes fixing onto Clara, who sat straight and unyielding beside Victor in the third row.

The delicate, innocent society mask peeled away entirely. Evelyn stood up from the defense table, ignoring her lawyer's frantic hand gestures to sit down. Her hands clenched into claw-like shapes, her face contorting into a visage of pure, unadulterated venom.

"You!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice echoing off the high plaster ceiling of the courtroom. "You little parasite! You ruined everything! I was supposed to have it all! The money, the penthouse, the name! You belong in the dirt!"

Judge Harrison slammed her gavel repeatedly. "Order in the court! Bailiff, restrain the defendant!"

Two large uniformed bailiffs rushed forward, grabbing Evelyn by her upper arms. Evelyn fought back like a cornered animal, kicking against the wooden table, her high-priced hair flying wildly around her face as she screamed curses at Clara and Victor.

"I killed Sarah!" Evelyn shrieked as she was forced down toward the floor. "I killed her and I enjoyed watching her die! And I should have killed that sniveling little brat too!"

The courtroom erupted into total chaos.

Victor pulled Clara toward him, shielding her from the flashing cameras of the media, while the bailiffs finally subdued Evelyn, dragging her through the side doors leading to the holding cells.
