Chapter 14 - The Trial's Final Echo

The state prison on the outer rim of the county was a brutalist structure of poured gray concrete and reinforced steel mesh.

In the small, windowless visitation room, Evelyn Vance sat behind a thick sheet of bulletproof plexiglass. She was dressed in an oversized, faded orange jumpsuit, her blonde hair dull, dark at the roots, and cut short in an uneven, prison-issued style.

Her face was hollow, her eyes sunken and rimmed with dark, permanent circles.

On the other side of the glass sat her lead attorney, holding a black leather briefcase.

"The appellate court denied the motion for a new trial this morning, Evelyn," the attorney said, his voice flat and devoid of any professional warmth. "The murder conviction stands. The sentence of life without the possibility of parole is final."

Evelyn stared at him through the glass. Her ice-blue eyes were dull, lifeless, devoid of the terrifying spark that had once governed her existence.

"And Victor?" Evelyn asked, her voice raspy from months of disuse. "What is he doing?"

The attorney snapped his briefcase shut. "Mr. Vance has transferred fifty percent of his corporate shares into a blind trust for his son. He has resigned from his executive position at Vance Architecture to manage the new children's foundation."

"And the nanny?" Evelyn hissed, her fingers twitching against the wooden ledge. "The cheap little nanny?"

The attorney stood up, buttoning his coat. He looked down at Evelyn with an expression of cold, professional detachment.

"She is now the co-chair of the Vance Foundation," the attorney said. "And from what I understand... Mr. Vance has proposed to her. They are getting married in the spring."

Evelyn froze.

The words hung in the sterile, fluorescent-lit air of the visitation room like a slow-acting poison.

The attorney turned and walked out of the room, the heavy steel door locking behind him with a deafening CLANG.

Evelyn sat alone behind the bulletproof glass. She looked at her own reflection in the dark, scratched surface—a hollow, forgotten ghost trapped in a cage of concrete and steel, doomed to spend the rest of her life in total, absolute, inescapable silence.
