Chapter 15 - The Light in the Windows

Spring evening at Maison Vance.

The towering glass walls of the penthouse caught the last golden rays of the setting sun, transforming the entire thirty-story structure into a beacon of warm, shimmering light that could be seen from miles across the city.

In the living room, the grand piano near the balcony was playing a soft, melodic Chopin nocturne.

Victor stood by the glass railing, holding a glass of sparkling water, his dark arm wrapped comfortably around Clara’s waist. Clara leaned her head against his shoulder, her hand resting on his chest, watching the city lights blink to life one by one below them.

In the nursery down the hall, Martha was softly singing an old Swedish lullaby, her deep, rhythmic voice lulling Leo into a deep, peaceful sleep.

"Do you remember the first day I came here?" Clara asked softly, looking out at the endless horizon.

Victor smiled, leaning down to press a gentle kiss into her dark hair. "I remember a terrified girl who looked like she was carrying the weight of the entire world on her shoulders."

"I was terrified," Clara admitted, turning her face to look into his gray eyes. "I thought this house was made of ice. I thought nothing warm could ever survive in here."

"And now?" Victor asked, his voice dropping into a tender, loving register.

Clara looked around the room—at the warm rugs, the scattered toys, the golden portrait of Sarah watching over them, and the warm light dancing off the glass walls.

"Now," Clara whispered, a radiant smile illuminating her face, "it's not made of ice anymore. It's just made of glass. And glass lets the light in."

They stood together against the evening sky, holding each other tight as the stars began to fill the vast blue expanse above the city—a family reborn out of shadows, protected by truth, and bathed in an unyielding, unbreakable light.
