THE ROSEWOOD ENIGMA / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Petals and the Pendant

The late afternoon light filtered through the canopy of cobblestone-paved Oak Street like liquid amber, casting long, elegant shadows against the rustic storefront of Le Jardin. The crisp air smelled of damp earth, freshly roasted coffee, and crushed velvet rose petals.

Standing on the sidewalk beside a wooden display crate packed with bright yellow daffodils, eight-year-old Lily held a galvanized metal bucket brimming with deep red roses. Her long blonde hair was pulled back in two neat braids, framing bright blue eyes that shone with a mixture of hope and fatigue. Her white cable-knit sweater, slightly oversized at the cuffs, gave her a vulnerable, delicate presence among the bustling midtown foot traffic.

"Would you like a rose, ma'am?" Lily asked, looking up as an elegant woman paused near the entrance.

Clara stopped. Dressed in a sharp dark grey blazer over a tailored black silk blouse, her dark brown hair fell in glossy waves over her shoulders. She turned her gaze down toward the child, her rich crimson lipstick parting into a gentle, motherly smile.

"Of course, sweetheart. These are beautiful. I'll take one," Clara said softly, reaching down to touch the velvety head of a blooming red rose.

As Clara bent forward, the lapels of her grey blazer parted. Hanging against her neck was an intricate gold necklace featuring a hand-carved red rose pendant, its edges gleaming with microscopic gold inlay under the low sun.

May you like

Lily’s hands froze on the rim of the bucket. Her blue eyes widened in immediate, breathless shock as her gaze locked onto the shimmering red stone resting against Clara’s throat.

"Ma'am?" Lily gasped, her voice dropping into a trembling whisper. "Your pendant looks just like my mom's."
