Chapter 1 - The Descent of the Specter

The grand ballroom of the Bellevue Palace Hotel hummed with the suffocating, moneyed arrogance of the city’s highest echelon. Beneath towering crystal chandeliers casting golden, honeyed light across polished marble floors, four hundred guests clad in bespoke tuxedos and flowing silk gowns drank vintage champagne. It was an event meticulously crafted to showcase the unassailable power of the Vance dynasty—a royal wedding designed to merge two massive defense contracting conglomerates.
Standing near the altar, Marcus Vance looked every bit the gilded heir. His black tuxedo was hand-tailored, his dark hair slicked back, his jawline sharp enough to cut glass. Beside him stood Chloe, his bride-to-be—a stunning blonde heiress whose white lace gown was encrusted with thousands of micro-diamonds. She beamed at the crowd, her smile a practiced masterpiece of high-society composure.
Then, the heavy brass-and-mahogany doors at the rear of the ballroom swung open with a slow, deliberate groan.
The music of the string quartet faltered, tapering off into a series of jagged, discordant scratches. A sudden, frigid draft swept through the heated room, carrying with it the faint, haunting scent of smoke, rain, and cheap antiseptic.
Walking down the central aisle, completely unannounced, was a woman dressed in a sleek, off-the-shoulder white satin gown. Her dark brown hair was pulled back into a tight, severe bun, emphasizing the pale, sharp contours of her jaw.
As she passed the first row of gilded chairs, her off-the-shoulder gown shifted slightly with her measured stride.
A collective gasp ripped through the audience.
Exposed across her pale upper back, right shoulder, and the left side of her slender neck was an appalling tapestry of grotesque, raised keloid scars. They were jagged, angry, purple-and-crimson tissue maps—unmistakable remnants of high-grade military explosives and shrapnel tearing through flesh.

"Look at her!" a woman in the second row shrieked, pressing a pearl-encrusted fan against her lips. "Gross! Get her out!"
"Security!" an elderly board member barked, raising his hand. "Remove that hideous creature!"
