Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Horizon

A black federal SUV pulled up behind them on the pier, its engine idling quietly.
A senior official from the Department of Defense stepped out, holding a thick leather folder under his arm. He walked over to Valeria, offering a formal, crisp salute.
"Captain Mercer," the official said respectfully. "The President has officially signed your full exoneration and reinstatement orders. Your rank, back pay, and full military honors have been restored. The Pentagon wants you in Washington on Monday to lead the newly formed Global Oversight Task Force."
Valeria returned the salute slowly, looking at the official documents inside the folder.

She looked back at Marcus, who was watching her with proud, quiet respect.
"Am I authorized to select my own second-in-command, Director?" Valeria asked the official.
"You have carte blanche, Captain," the official replied.
Valeria turned to Marcus, a genuine, warm smile finally illuminating her face, transforming her scarred features into a portrait of absolute, victorious grace.
"What do you say, Lieutenant?" Valeria asked, holding out her hand to him. "Ready to get back to work?"
Marcus looked at her hand, then looked up into her eyes. He stepped forward and grasped her hand in a firm, soldier's grip.

"Whenever you're ready, Captain," Marcus said, his voice steady and filled with unbroken hope. "Lead the way."
Together, they walked away from the wet docks into the bright, golden light of the new morning—two soldiers who had walked through the fires of hell, conquered their ghosts, and finally found their way home.
