Chapter 12 - The Battle in the Fog

Valeria squeezed the trigger of her rifle.
PHUT.
The suppressed round shattered the spotlight mounted on the flatbed truck, plunging the dock into instant, blinding shadow.
Before the mercenaries could react, Valeria fired two more precise shots, disabling the crane operator and taking down the lead guard near the freighter's gangway.
"Ambush!" a mercenary shouted, raising his weapon toward the gantry crane. "Light them up!"
Muzzle flashes strobed through the fog like violent lightning as automatic fire chewed into the steel beams above.
Marcus swung down from the crane ladder, dropping ten feet onto the top of a shipping container. He fired three rapid shots, clearing the perimeter around the semi-truck, before sliding down a steel cable to the wet concrete floor.
Valeria dropped beside him, moving with fluid, lethal efficiency. Despite the severe keloid scars covering her shoulder and neck, her movements were flawlessly precise, trained by years of special operations combat.

Together, the former captain and her lieutenant swept through the dock like wraiths, neutralizing the remaining mercenaries before a single alarm could be raised on the cargo ship.
Within five minutes, the dock was quiet again, save for the rhythmic patter of rain against the steel shipping containers.
