THE SCARS OF THE VALKYRIE / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - The Dawn of Reckoning

By 6:00 AM, the cold rain had stopped, giving way to the pale, golden light of dawn breaking over the city harbor.

Dozens of law enforcement vehicles lined the pier, their red and blue lights flashing rhythmically against the wet asphalt. Federal agents were busy cataloging the seized warheads and loading the captured mercenaries into transport vans.

Valeria stood near the edge of the dock, looking out over the calm, steel-gray water of the bay.

She had removed her tactical vest, wearing Marcus’s black wool tuxedo jacket over her shoulders once again to protect against the morning chill.

Marcus walked up beside her, holding two steaming paper cups of cheap black coffee from an emergency response vehicle. He handed one to her, his fingers briefly brushing hers.

"The federal prosecutor just called," Marcus said softly, looking out at the rising sun. "My father is signing a full confession in exchange for taking the death penalty off the table. Vance Defense Systems is being liquidated by the government."

Valeria took a slow sip of the hot coffee, feeling the warmth spread through her chest. "And what about you, Marcus? You lost your company, your inheritance, and your wedding in less than twelve hours."

Marcus looked at her—at the scarred profile of the bravest person he had ever known, standing strong against the golden morning light.

"I didn't lose anything that was worth keeping, Captain," Marcus smiled gently. "For the first time in my life, I'm clean."
