Chapter 10 - The Unseen Listener

Emma closed the steel safe and walked back to where Viktor lay.

"They won't come after us, Viktor," Emma said, pulling a small black smartphone from her teal hoodie pocket.

The screen was illuminated. An active call had been running for twenty-four minutes.

The caller ID displayed a single name: AGENT MARCUS REED - FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION.

A crisp, authoritative voice spoke through the phone's speaker, filling the silent dojo with cold, absolute finality.

"We have the entire interaction recorded, Colonel Vance. SWAT elements and federal marshals are currently holding your perimeter. Do not attempt to move."

Viktor’s face drained of what little color remained. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

"My father didn't just teach me how to fight, Viktor," Emma said softly, sliding the phone back into her pocket. "He taught me how to set a trap."

Outside, the distant, rising wail of police sirens broke through the quiet afternoon air, echoing off the high hills surrounding the valley.

Sarah lowered the gun, setting it carefully on the wooden bench near the door. She walked over to her daughter and pulled her tight into her arms, wrapping her coat around Emma’s shoulders.

Emma rested her head against her mother's side. Her icy blue eyes slowly softened, the terrifying, lethal focus melting away, leaving behind the face of a little girl who could finally go home.

Viktor Vance lay alone on the cold floor, listening to the approaching sirens, staring up at the empty ceiling as his legacy, his power, and his freedom vanished into the fading golden light.
