Chapter 13 - The Legacy of Gabriel Miller

Three days later, the rain cleared over the coastal town of Birch Bay.
The morning sun rose crisp and clear, casting a pale golden sheen over the waters of Puget Sound. Standing on a grassy bluff overlooking the ocean was a simple granite headstone bearing the name:
MAJOR GABRIEL MILLER
1980 – 2018
"A SHIELD IN THE DARKNESS"
Sarah stood before the grave wearing a simple black coat, a bouquet of white lilies held in her hands. Beside her stood Emma, her small hand wrapped securely inside her mother's grip.
There were no military honors, no rifle volleys, and no fanfare. Just the quiet sound of waves crashing against the rocky shore below and the call of seagulls floating on the breeze.
Sarah knelt, placing the white lilies at the base of the granite stone. She ran her fingers over the carved letters of her husband's name.
"It's over, Gabriel," Sarah whispered softly, her tears falling onto the dark green grass. "They know the truth now. Everyone knows what you died for."
Emma stepped closer to the headstone. She didn't drop into a stance. She didn't pull her hands into fists. She simply stood straight, her chin raised, looking at the stone with clear, quiet eyes.

"I kept my promise, Dad," Emma murmured. "I protected Mom."
A gentle gust of wind blew across the bluff, rustling the autumn leaves on the surrounding trees, carrying away the lingering chill of the long winter that had held their lives in grip for seven years.
