Chapter 13 - Trial by Fire

Chloe froze, her hand shaking violently as she stared at the flashing blue light. The psychological trap was absolute; firing the gun would be a live-streamed execution, guaranteeing a lifetime in a maximum-security prison without the possibility of bail.

"You... you bitch..." Chloe whimpered, her composure collapsing completely as she realized her entire life, her status, and her freedom were gone.

SIRENS.

The long, wailling screams of dozens of police cruisers, federal SWAT vehicles, and coast guard boats filled the air, their red and blue lights flashing across the smoke-filled bay. The perimeter of the Navy Yard had been completely surrounded by law enforcement.

"NYPD! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!" a voice boomed from a Coast Guard cutter pulling up alongside the pier, its massive spotlight illuminating Chloe, Arthur, and the disarmed security guards in a blinding white glare.

Julian rushed through the thinning smoke, dropping his weapon onto the wooden planks as police officers flooded the pier, tactical gear gleaming in the rain.

Chloe dropped her gun, sinking to her knees in the wet wood, sobbing hysterically as federal agents forced her arms behind her back, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

Arthur Sterling stood motionless in the center of the pier as three SWAT officers tackled him to the ground, his silver hair plastered to the wet wood, his eyes staring blankly into the dark sky as his empire was dismantled around him.

Julian ignored the police commands, running straight past the tactical team to where Sarah sat on the wooden planks, cradling Leo in her arms.

He dropped to his knees, wrapping his strong arms around both of them, pulling them into a fierce, desperate embrace, his tears mixing with the rain on his cheeks.

"It's over," Julian sobbed into Sarah's hair. "It's finally over."
