Chapter 14 - The Reckoning

Six months later.
The Federal Courthouse in Lower Manhattan was packed to capacity with international press, legal teams, and spectators. The trial of Arthur Sterling and the Vance family had dominated global news for half a year, exposing the terrifying intersection of corporate wealth, illegal medical testing, and high-level corruption.
Sarah sat on the witness stand, dressed in an elegant navy suit, her posture poised, calm, and commanding. Across the courtroom, seated at the defense table in orange prison jumpsuits, were Arthur Sterling and Chloe Vance. Both looked hollowed out, their former arrogance replaced by the somber reality of their fate.
"Mademoiselle," the Federal Prosecutor spoke, standing before the jury. "Can you identify the man who authorized your unlawful detention and chemical manipulation?"
Sarah raised her hand, her finger pointing directly and unhesitatingly at Arthur Sterling. "Arthur Sterling," she stated, her voice echoing clearly off the high marble walls of the courtroom. "He treated human lives as disposable assets. He tried to destroy my mind, and he tried to steal my son."
A murmur swept through the gallery.
The judge slammed his gavel down sharply. "Silence in the court."
Two hours later, the jury returned with a unanimous verdict. Arthur Sterling was sentenced to forty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Chloe Vance received thirty years for conspiracy, attempted murder, and corporate fraud. The Vance-Sterling corporate entity was forcibly dissolved by federal regulators, its assets liquidated to pay restitution to the victims of their illegal drug trials.

As Arthur was led away in chains, he stopped briefy near the gallery railing, looking at Julian, who stood in the front row holding eighteen-month-old Leo in his arms.
Arthur opened his mouth as if to speak, to utter one last command, but Julian simply turned his back on his father, walking out through the massive brass doors of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight.
