THE SILENT BLOODLINE / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - The Mind's Labyrinth

The private elevator doors slid open with a soft hydraulic hiss, revealing Arthur Sterling and his armed detail stepping onto the hardwood floor of the loft. The apartment was silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator and the gentle patter of rain against the high windows.

Arthur stepped forward, his leather gloves creaking as he tightened his fists, his eyes scanning the empty room. "Search the perimeter," he ordered coldly. "Find the boy."

Chloe stepped out behind him, her cream silk dress ruined, stained with rain and dirt from the garage, her eyes wild with a psychotic, unhinged frustration. "They aren't here, Arthur! The balcony door is locked!"

Arthur walked over to the mahogany desk, his eyes landing on the secure terminal. The screen was still active, displaying a single, progress bar that had just reached 100%.

DNA PATERNITY CONFIRMATION: MATCH FOUND (99.99%) - SUBJECT: LEO STERLING.

TRANSMITTING DATA TO NEW YORK STATE FAMILY COURT... COMPLETE.

Arthur’s face went completely pale, the icy composure he had maintained for seventy years shattering in an instant. "No..." he whispered.

"What is it?" Chloe demanded, rushing to the desk.

Suddenly, every screen in the loft—the monitors, the smart television on the wall, even Arthur's personal phone—flashed bright red. A high-volume audio file began to play through the loft's integrated speaker system.

It was a voice recording from eighteen months ago—Arthur Sterling’s voice, clear and unedited:

"...administer the Vance neuro-inhibitor daily. I don't care if it causes permanent cognitive damage to the girl. Once she leaves the apartment, ensure the media receives the story that she abandoned the child due to postpartum psychosis. Julian will marry Chloe, and the trust will be sealed."

Chloe stared at Arthur in horror as the recording echoed off the high concrete walls. "You recorded that?"

May you like

"I didn't," Arthur rasped, his hands shaking as he realized the trap he had walked into. "Julian did. He kept a wiretap in my office for two years."

Down in the dark, damp belly of the Spring Street subway tunnel, Sarah, Julian, and Leo walked quickly along the abandoned catwalk, the voice recording playing simultaneously across every major media server in New York City via Julian's automated release protocol.
