Chapter 2 - The Echoes of Geneva

The hallway seemed to shrink, the golden chandeliers blurring into streaks of harsh light as Julian’s words echoed in Sarah's ears. "I came back." It was a claim that shattered the foundation of her entire reality—the single truth she had used to harden her heart during the lonely nights of her pregnancy and the terrified months that followed.

"You're lying," Sarah rasped, her voice trembling as she backed toward the elevator bank. She squeezed Leo closer, feeling his rhythmic breathing against her collarbone. "I waited three days in that apartment, Julian. I called your phone a hundred times. Your secretary told me you were in Geneva, finalizing the Vance merger. Then your father’s men showed up with non-disclosure agreements and a threat to destroy my family if I didn't clear out by midnight."

Julian’s face went hollow. The rage that had filled his posture drained away, leaving a desperate, haunted ruin. He took another step toward her, extending a trembling hand, but stopped himself before touching her arm.

"My father intercepted my flight," Julian said, his voice dropping into an icy, dangerous register. "I never made it to Geneva, Sarah. I was sedated and held in a private psychiatric facility in Upstate New York for six weeks under the pretense of an 'acute stress episode.' By the time I woke up, by the time I fought my way out of that place, our apartment was empty, wiped clean of every trace of you. They told me you took two million dollars from the Sterling Foundation and fled to Europe."

Sarah stared at him, her chest heaving as she processed the horror of his words. The psychological machinery of the Sterling family was vast, ruthless, and terrifyingly efficient. They hadn't just separated them; they had constructed two entirely different realities to ensure neither would ever look for the other.

"Julian..." Chloe’s voice cut through the heavy air like a glass blade. The blonde heiress stepped out from the shadow of the elevator frame, her cream silk dress rustling against the marble floor. Her shock had hardened into a cold, practiced composure. "Julian, darling, look at what she's doing. She's a master manipulator. You know what she was before you met her—a nobody working in your firm's archiving department. She framed this entire narrative to ambush you on the night of our engagement announcement."

Julian didn't turn around. His gaze remained locked on Sarah, his brown eyes searching her tear-stained face with a fierce, possessive intensity. "Shut up, Chloe," he said quietly.

Chloe froze, her jaw tightening as her delicate features twisted into a scowl. "Excuse me? We have two hundred guests waiting in the Grand Ballroom downstairs, including your father and the board of directors. You are not going to ruin the merger over a bastard child and a disgraced mistress!"

Julian spun around, his posture rigid as he stepped between Chloe and Sarah, shielding the mother and child. "Say that word again," Julian warned, his voice low and vibrating with violent intent, "and I will tear down Vance Pharmaceuticals before the sun rises tomorrow."
