Chapter 11 - Smoke and Mirrors

The rain over Heathrow Airport was relentless, turning the tarmac into a sea of blurred yellow runway lights. Victoria walked through the private arrivals terminal, her small leather carry-on bag slung casually over her shoulder.

She wore a tailored black trench coat, dark sunglasses covering her eyes despite the dim morning light, and a silver band on her left index finger—a device designed to jam localized audio recording equipment within a five-meter radius.

As she cleared the security checkpoint using her fresh British passport under the name Claire Sterling, her phone buzzed in her coat pocket.

A text message from her handler:

TARGET IS AT THE SAVOY. SUITE 412. PRIVATE DINNER AT 20:00.

Victoria didn't reply. She deleted the message, stepped out of the terminal doors, and slid into the back of an iconic black London taxi.

"The Savoy Hotel, Strand," she instructed the driver, her voice adopting a flawless, aristocratic British accent.

As the taxi pulled out into the busy morning traffic, Victoria opened her leather bag and pulled out a small, high-resolution tablet. She brought up the blueprints for The Savoy's fourth floor.

Suite 412 was an executive corner suite featuring a private balcony overlooking the River Thames. It had two entry points: the primary corridor door monitored by floor security, and a secondary service access corridor used by room service staff.

Victoria zoomed in on the suite's interior layout. Her eyes narrowed. The floor plan was eerily similar to the West Wing layout of the Vance Estate in Chicago—a large master bedroom, an adjoining sitting room, and a grand walk-in closet located off the main hallway.

He selected the location intentionally, Victoria realized, her pulse quickening slightly. He knows I'm coming.

A amateur asset would consider this a trap and pull out. But Victoria was no amateur. In psychological warfare, when your target knows you are coming, the greatest weapon isn't surprise—it's controlling the target's expectation.

She pulled a small silver vial from her coat lining. It contained a tasteless, odorless paralytic compound—a substance that, when introduced to a beverage, would render a grown man completely paralyzed within three minutes while leaving his mind fully conscious.

"He wants to play the closet game again," Victoria whispered to herself, looking out at the rain-slicked streets of London. "This time, I choose who locks the door."
