THE SILENT CLOSET / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - The Master's Gambit

Victoria pulled Lily out of the child's closet, keeping the girl behind her back as she backed toward the far corner of the nursery. Her mind raced through every tactical scenario. She had no weapon, no armor, and was dressed in an unwieldy navy velvet gown that hindered her movement. Julian had a suppressed firearm and absolute control over the estate’s layout.

"Stay behind me, Lily," Victoria whispered, her eyes searching the nursery for anything that could be used as an improvised weapon.

Her gaze landed on a heavy bronze bookend shaped like a sailboat sitting on the lower shelf of the bookcase near the window. She reached down silently, her fingers wrapping around the cold, heavy metal.

Outside the door, the heavy footsteps stopped.

The silence that followed was far worse than the shouting. Julian was standing directly outside the nursery frame, calculating his entry.

Suddenly, the door was kicked open with splintering force.

Julian stepped into the light of the crescent moon nightlight. His face was scratched, a streak of blood running down his left cheek from his struggle with Arthur. His tailored tuxedo jacket was torn at the shoulder, and his eyes were wild, bloodshot, and completely devoid of sanity.

"There you are," Julian said softly, raising the suppressed pistol, aiming it straight at Victoria's chest. "End of the line, asset."

"She's a child, Julian!" Victoria screamed, stepping directly between the gun barrel and young Lily. "Your own niece! How can you do this?"

"She's a liability," Julian replied coldly, taking a slow step forward into the room. "She was a liability eighteen months ago when she watched me put the sedatives in Evelyn's drink, and she's a liability tonight. Mother and I will mourn them both. A tragic murder-suicide committed by my broken, unstable brother Arthur after his fraudulent scheme was exposed."

Julian adjusted his grip on the gun, his finger tightening slowly on the trigger. "Goodbye, Victoria."

Before Julian could pull the trigger, a dark figure rushed into the room from the open balcony window behind him.

It was Arthur.

His face was covered in dust, his red hair wild, his tuxedo shirt torn open at the collar. He had climbed the exterior drainage pipe from the lower terrace, scaling the sheer brick wall of the estate in a desperate bid to reach his daughter.

Arthur threw his entire weight onto Julian from behind, slamming him into the nursery bookcase.

Books, heavy wooden toys, and framed photographs rained down around them as the two brothers crashed to the floor once more. Julian roared in frustration, bringing the handle of the pistol down hard against the side of Arthur's head.

Arthur gasped, blood spurting from his temple as he slumped sideways onto the carpet, his grip on Julian loosening.

Julian scrambled up onto his knees, pointing the pistol directly at his bleeding brother's face. "You should have stayed down, Arthur!"

CLANG!

Victoria lunged forward, swinging the heavy bronze sailboat bookend with every ounce of strength remaining in her body. The solid metal struck Julian squarely on the back of his head with a sickening crack.

Julian's eyes rolled back into his head. He let out a low groan, dropping the gun as he collapsed face-down onto the plush nursery carpet, unconscious and motionless.

Victoria dropped the bronze bookend, her hands shaking so violently she could barely stand. She kicked the fallen pistol far across the room under the window sill.

"Arthur!" Victoria dropped to her knees beside Arthur, pressing her hand against the bleeding wound on his temple. "Arthur, stay with me! Look at me!"

Arthur groaned, his eyes fluttering open as he looked up at her, coughing weakly. He reached out a trembling, blood-stained hand, touching her face. "Lily..." he gasped out. "Is... is she safe?"

"I'm here, Daddy!" Lily cried out, running from the corner and throwing her small arms around her father's neck, sobbing hysterically into his torn shirt.

Arthur wrapped his broad arms around his daughter, holding her close, burying his face in her golden curls as tears mixed with the blood on his cheek. "I've got you, baby. I've got you."

Footsteps thunderously approached down the hallway.

A squad of armed police officers in tactical gear, weapons raised, rushed into the nursery, led by two senior detectives. Behind them, holding a handkerchief to her face, was Eleanor Vance—her expression completely drained of triumph, realizing her entire empire had just collapsed around her feet.

"Police! Don't move! Hands where we can see them!" the lead detective yelled, his weapon trained on the room.

Victoria slowly raised her hands, sitting back on her heels beside Arthur and Lily. The flashing red and blue lights from the courtyard below reflected off the walls of the room, casting alternating shades of danger and safety over the scene.

She looked at Eleanor, who stood frozen in the doorway, surrounded by officers.

"Check his closet, Detective," Victoria said, her voice rising clear and unyielding above the chaotic noise of the police radios. "Check Julian Vance's private safe in the East Wing. You'll find the original toxicology reports from Evelyn Vance's death, the offshore transfer receipts, and the phone used to orchestrate this frame-up."

The detective looked at Victoria, then at the unconscious Julian on the floor, and finally at Eleanor Vance, whose pale lips trembled as an officer stepped behind her, pulling her arms behind her back to apply the handcuffs.
