Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

The revelation hung in the air like a heavy blade suspended by a thread.
Julian’s knuckles turned bone-white on the grip of the suppressed pistol. His calm, smooth demeanor shattered, replaced by a dark, twitching fury that exposed the monster hidden beneath his expensive tuxedo.
"You talk too much, Victoria," Julian snarled, shifting the barrel of the gun from Arthur’s chest straight toward Victoria's forehead.
"Julian, no!" Arthur screamed, charging forward with all the weight of his broad frame.
Arthur slammed into his brother's torso, throwing Julian off balance. The muffled thump of the suppressed gun echoed through the bedroom as a bullet tore through the plush velvet curtain behind the bed, shattering the window glass behind it.
The two brothers hit the hardwood floor with violent force, wrestling frantically for control of the weapon. Glasses rattled on the nightstand, and a heavy brass table lamp crashed to the floor, plunging half the room into darkness.
"Julian! Get off him!" Eleanor yelled, her sharp voice losing its cold composure as she backed away toward the wall, her silver hair unravelling from its tight coil.
Victoria didn't hesitate. She didn't wait to see who would win the physical struggle on the floor. Survival instinct, honed through years of covert operations, took complete control of her body.
She kicked off her heavy high-heeled shoes, grabbing the edge of her navy velvet dress to lift the heavy fabric, and sprinted out of the bedroom into the dark corridor of the West Wing.
The hallway was quiet, but downstairs, the chaotic sounds of shouting, screaming guests, and heavy footsteps signaled that the police had breached the main foyer. Blinding red and blue strobe lights flashed through the high stained-glass windows of the grand winding staircase.
Victoria didn't head downstairs toward the police. She knew the officers would instantly detain her based on Eleanor's pre-packaged narrative. She had to find Lily. The child was the only living witness who could prove who had actually entered the West Wing suite before the party began.
Victoria sprinted down the narrow service hallway toward the nursery in the East Wing. Her bare feet made no noise against the carpet as she maneuvered through the maze of shadow and gold-trimmed doors.
"Lily!" Victoria whispered frantically into the darkness as she pushed open the door to the child's bedroom. "Lily, are you in here?"
The nursery was dimly lit by a small nightlight shaped like a crescent moon. White lace curtains fluttered softly near an open window, bringing in the cold night draft. The bed was messy, the sheets pulled back, but the room was empty.
"Lily?" Victoria called out again, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
From inside the adjacent walk-in closet—a smaller, child-sized version of the master closet—came the faint, wet sound of soft sobbing.
Victoria rushed over and knelt beside the closet door. She pulled the door open gently.
Cowering in the dark corner behind a rack of small winter coats was young Lily. She was clutching her fox plushie against her face, her body shaking uncontrollably, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror.
"Lily, sweetie, it's me," Victoria said softly, lowering her voice, keeping her hands visible and open. "It's Victoria. I'm not going to hurt you."
Lily pulled the fox plushie lower, her small, swollen eyes fixing on Victoria. "He... he told me to say it," the child whimpered, her voice cracking with pure innocence. "Uncle Julian told me to run into the big room and shout about the closet..."
Victoria’s blood ran cold. "Julian told you to say that?"
Lily nodded frantically, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. "He said... he said if I didn't say it, he would send Daddy away like he sent Mommy away. He had a small glass bottle in his hand... the same bottle he put in Mommy's juice before she went out on the balcony..."
Victoria closed her eyes for a brief second, a cold wave of horror washing over her. The puzzle was finally complete. Evelyn hadn't fallen by accident, nor had Arthur poisoned her. Julian had systematically murdered his sister-in-law to destroy Arthur mentally, slowly setting up the long game to seize control of the family empire. And tonight, he had used the traumatized seven-year-old child to execute the final stroke.
"Okay, sweetie," Victoria said gently, reaching out and wrapping her arms around the trembling girl, pulling her tight against her chest. "Okay. You did so good. You were so brave. I'm going to get you out of here, okay? I'm going to protect you."
BANG!

A loud gunshot echoed from the main hallway outside the nursery, followed by the sound of heavy boots sprinting toward the East Wing.
"Victoria!" Julian's voice roared through the empty corridor, echoing off the high ceilings, stripped of all aristocratic elegance, wild and unhinged. "I know you have the girl! Bring her out, or I swear to God I will burn this wing to the ground with both of you inside it!"
