Chapter 9 - The Ghost's Ledger

Two weeks had passed since the night at the Vance Estate. The story had exploded across global news outlets, dominating headlines for days: The Vance Dynasty Collapses: CFO and Matriarch Arrested for Murder and Corporate Conspiracy.
In a quiet, rain-slicked cafe in downtown Toronto, far removed from the high-society circles of Chicago, Victoria sat near the window. She wore a simple dark sweater, her blonde hair cut short into a chic bob, dyed a subtle shade of chestnut brown. Under the name "Elena Vance"—a name she had decided to keep for her new life—she was just another customer enjoying an afternoon tea.
Her tablet sat open on the small wooden table, displaying an encrypted email inbox.
A single new message sat in her inbox, sent from an untraceable server:
SUBJECT: CONTRACT SETTLEMENT
SENDER: UNKNOWN
Victoria tapped the screen to open the message.
Victoria,
The funds promised for the recovery of the Vance ledgers have been transferred to your primary Swiss account. Julian Vance has agreed to a full confession in exchange for avoiding the death penalty. Eleanor Vance remains uncooperative, but the financial audit of Vance Enterprises has rendered her defense useless.
However, one item remains unaccounted for.
During the forensic sweep of Arthur Vance’s private study, investigators found a second hidden safe located behind the floorboards beneath his desk. Inside that safe was a third set of ledgers—ledgers detailing offshore transactions made three weeks AFTER Evelyn Vance’s death, signed by Arthur Vance himself.
It appears your former fiancé was not as innocent as he claimed.
A new contract has been generated.
Target: Arthur Vance.
Location: London, UK.
Reply to accept.
Victoria stared at the screen, her breathing halting for a fraction of a second. The rain tapped rhythmically against the glass window of the cafe, mirroring the cold, calculated rhythm of her own heart.
She looked down at her hands—the same hands that had held the crystal champagne glass, the same hands that had wielded the bronze sailboat to save a child's life.
She closed her eyes, remembering Arthur’s cold, analytical eyes in the ballroom, the dangerous calmness in his voice when he asked her to open the room, and the soft, tragic smile he had given her on the terrace at dawn.
Every truth in the Vance family was built upon a deeper lie. There were no victims in that house—only players who hadn't been caught yet.
Victoria opened her tablet’s keyboard, her fingers hovering over the glass screen.
She typed a single word:
May you like
ACCEPTED.
She closed the tablet, stood up from the wooden table, and walked out of the warm cafe into the cool, cleansing rain, stepping back into the shadows where she belonged.
