Chapter 10 - The Resonance

Three days later.
The sun was rising over the Atlantic coast, casting long, rose-gold light across the grey waters of the bay.
In the harbor district, sitting on a private bench overlooking the docks, sat Maya Lin and Evelyn Vance.
Maya was dressed in a simple, elegant dark wool coat, her long hair falling freely around her shoulders, no longer pinned back into the oppressive bun of a servant. Beside her, Evelyn wore a ivory coat, her face rested, her eyes clear and free of the sedatives that had fogged her mind for twenty years.
A radio in the newsstand twenty feet away was broadcasting the morning headlines:
"...Former State Senator Richard Vance remains in critical condition under police guard at St. Jude Hospital following an industrial gas explosion behind an embassy district restaurant. Federal prosecutors have unsealed a thirty-count indictment charging Vance with corporate fraud, racketeering, and murder in connection with the 2002 death of shipping magnate Thomas Lin..."
Evelyn reached out, taking Maya’s hand into her own.
"Are you ready?" Evelyn asked softly, looking toward the large passenger liner docked at Pier 14, waiting to take them to a private estate in the South of France.
Maya reached up with her free hand, touching the silver heart-shaped locket resting against her collarbone.
She pressed the tiny, hidden notch on the left seam.
CLICK.
The silver locket sprang open for the first time in twenty-two years.
Inside, protected behind a round pane of glass, was a tiny, pristine photograph of a young woman smiling in the sun—and beside it, written in delicate gold ink, a simple inscription: To my daughter Maya. Always loved. Never lost.
Maya smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached all the way to her dark, brilliant eyes. She closed the locket with a soft snap that echoed like a promise across the quiet harbor.

"I'm ready," Maya said.
They stood up together, turning their backs on the dark city, and walked toward the ship as the morning sun flooded the world with light.
