Chapter 8 - The Psychological Fracture

Maya felt a strange, terrifying shift occur inside her mind.

For twenty-four years, she had lived in the shadows—afraid of her own name, afraid of the dark, afraid of the powerful men who owned the world. She had believed she was an orphan because nobody wanted her. She had believed she was weak because she was poor.

But looking at Richard Vance—looking at the man who had stolen her mother, murdered her father, and spent two decades living off the blood money of her family—the fear vanished.

It was replaced by a cold, lethal, and absolute clarity.

"You're making a mistake," Maya said softly.

Richard paused, the lighter flame hovering an inch from his cigarette. He looked at Maya with mild amusement. "Am I?"

"You think I stayed at this job for six months because I needed the money," Maya murmured, her hand slowly sliding behind her back into the deep pocket of her black waist apron.

"You're a waitress, child," Richard scoffed, shutting his lighter with a sharp CLICK. "You scrub dishes for minimum wage."

"I work the late shift," Maya continued, her voice entirely flat, devoid of panic. "I handle the cash drops. I know where every security camera in this alley points. And more importantly... I know that the restaurant’s gas line regulator is mounted right behind your head."

Richard’s smile faltered. His eyes flicked to the brick wall beside him, where a thick, yellow-painted iron pipe ran from the basement up to the commercial kitchens.

Maya pulled her hand out of her apron pocket.

She wasn't holding a knife. She was holding a heavy, steel industrial blowtorch—the kind used by the pastry chefs to caramelize creme brulee, filled with pressurized butane.
