Chapter 4 - The Architecture of Deception

Maya backed away half a step, her boots sinking into the thick carpet. Her head spun with a terrifying, dizzying nausea.
Her entire existence had been constructed upon a bedrock of lies.
She had grown up in a sterile, state-run orphanage on the northern coast, told by indifferent social workers that she was found tucked inside a cardboard box behind a train station during the winter storm of 2002. The silver locket was the only object in her possession—a useless artifact of a forgotten past that she had guarded with her life.
Now, sitting before her in a five-star restaurant, was a woman worth hundreds of millions of dollars claiming to be her mother.
"Who told you I died?" Maya demanded, her voice dropping into a harsh, fierce whisper as she leaned over the table, her hands flat on the mahogany surface. "Who gave you that blanket?"
Evelyn lifted her head. Her face was pale, her eyes dark with a sudden, terrifying realization. The grief in her features was instantly supplanted by a sharp, cold panic.
"My husband," Evelyn whispered. "Your stepfather... Richard."
Maya’s blood turned to ice water.
Richard Vance was one of the most powerful corporate figures in the country—a man whose face appeared regularly on business magazines, a former state senator who sat on the board of three national defense contractors. He was also the man who had assumed total controlling interest over the Vance Maritime Trust after Evelyn’s first husband—Maya’s biological father—died in a mysterious car crash two decades ago.
"Richard told me the nursery burned while I was in the hospital recovering from pneumonia," Evelyn stammered, her fingers clutching Maya’s hand. "He handled the funeral... he handled the police reports... he kept me drugged on sedatives for six months so I wouldn't ask questions..."

Evelyn stopped mid-sentence. Her eyes drifted past Maya’s shoulder, looking toward the dark, tinted glass windows at the front of the restaurant.
Parked at the curb, visible through the rain-streaked pane, was a black luxury SUV with dark-tinted windows. Its headlights flashed twice.
