Chapter 7 - The Trap in the Alley

Standing in the alley, illuminated only by the sickly green glow of a single sodium emergency light, was Richard Vance himself.
He was sixty-two years old, tall, impeccably preserved, wearing a dark grey cashmere overcoat and leather gloves. His silver hair was neatly slicked back, and his eyes—a pale, icy blue—held no emotion whatsoever as he looked at his wife, and then at Maya.
Behind him stood two more armed guards, their hands buried inside their coat pockets, holding silenced sidearms.
"Hello, Evelyn," Richard said smoothly, his deep, radio-calibrated voice echoing off the brick walls of the narrow alley. "I told you that dining alone in this neighborhood was unsafe."
Evelyn shrank back behind Maya, her hand clutching the girl's white shirt collar. "You... you monster," Evelyn spat, her voice shaking with rage. "You stole my daughter. You tried to burn her alive!"
Richard chuckled softly—a dry, humorless sound that sent a shiver down Maya’s spine.
"A tragic accident of history, my dear," Richard murmured, taking a slow step into the doorway, forcing Maya and Evelyn back into the basement corridor. "A simple electrical short in the nursery wiring. It was tragic. But tragic accidents happen every day. Just like the accident that took your private investigator..."
Richard’s cold gaze shifted from Evelyn to Maya. He looked down at the silver heart-shaped locket resting against Maya’s chest, and his eyes narrowed slightly.
"So," Richard sighed, adjusting his glove, "the bastard’s bloodline survived after all. You really do look like him, girl. Same stubborn jaw. Same worthless eyes."
"Don't touch her!" Evelyn screamed, stepping in front of Maya defensively.
"Stand down, Evelyn," Richard ordered, pulling a heavy silver cigarette case from his pocket. "You're coming home. You're going to take your medication, and you're going to sign the conservatorship papers giving me voting proxy over the Vance Maritime stock. As for the girl..."
May you like
Richard flicked his lighter. The yellow flame illuminated his hollow cheeks for a fraction of a second.
"The girl will simply disappear back into the gutter where she belongs."
