Chapter 7 - The Quiet After the Storm

By 9:00 PM, the grand mansion had descended into a heavy, suffocating quiet. The guests had fled hours ago, eager to spread the gossip of the Vance family collapse to every country club and penthouse in the city. The lawn had been cleared, but the dark, ugly mud pit remained, illuminated by the cold security floodlights outside.

In the nursery on the second floor, the air smelled of sweet chamomile and lavender.

Maya sat in the dark plush rocking chair, holding Chloe close. The child had finally been bathed, her golden hair damp and clean, wrapped in a soft yellow fleece blanket. She was fast asleep, her tiny fingers still holding tightly to the fabric of Maya’s shirt, her chest rising and falling in rhythmic, quiet breaths.

The nursery door opened softly, casting a warm sliver of light across the carpet. Julian stepped into the room, having discarded his suit jacket and tie. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his eyes shadowed with deep, dark exhaustion.

He walked quietly across the room and knelt beside the rocking chair, placing his large, warm hand gently over Maya’s knee.

"How is she?" Julian asked softly, his voice rough and laced with guilt.

"She's sleeping," Maya whispered, her voice tired. "The doctor said there are no broken bones, just deep bruising on her wrists from where the ribbon was tied. And... psychological shock."

Julian closed his eyes, dropping his head against Maya’s lap. A heavy, ragged sigh escaped his chest. "I'm so sorry, Maya. God, I am so sorry. I knew my mother hated our marriage, but I never... I never thought she was capable of harming a child."

Maya stared down at her husband’s dark hair. Her hand reached out automatically, her fingers tracing the back of his neck, but her expression remained cold and distant.

"She didn't do it alone, Julian," Maya murmured softly.

Julian lifted his head, frowning slightly in the dim light. "What do you mean?"

"Chloe is three," Maya said, her brown eyes locking onto his with an intense, unblinking focus. "She doesn't wander off on her own. Someone took her from the play area near the conservatory while I was in the kitchen retrieving her juice. Someone handed her to your mother."
