Chapter 9 - The Shadow in the East Wing
At midnight, the mansion was a labyrinth of dark corridors and creaking floors.
Maya slipped out of the master bedroom, dressed in dark clothing and soft-soled shoes. In her hand, she carried a small USB flash drive—a diagnostic bypass tool she had secretly purchased months ago when Victoria’s passive-aggressive threats had first begun to escalate. Maya was no longer the naive, helpless girl who had entered this house three years ago. Survival in the Vance family required armor, and Maya had learned how to forge her own.
She navigated the long, carpeted hallways toward the East Wing—the isolated section of the estate reserved for Arthur’s high-tech private office and server rooms.
The heavy oak door to Arthur’s study was locked, a glowing digital keypad mounted on the frame. Maya didn't hesitate. She knew Arthur’s habits; he was a man obsessed with legacy numbers. She punched in the founding date of the Vance shipping line—1894.
The lock clicked softly. A green light flashed.
Maya slipped inside, closing the door quietly behind her. The office was cool and smelled of ozone, warm plastic, and stale coffee. Multiple monitors glowed on a massive horseshoe desk, casting an eerie blue light across stacks of circuit boards and encrypted drives.
She glided behind the desk, her heart pounding against her ribs as she inserted her bypass drive into the main terminal. The screen flickered, prompting an administrative override. Within seconds, lines of green code began scrolling down the monitor.
Maya navigated directly to the internal server logs for that afternoon.
"Come on... come on..." she whispered under her breath.
The security log opened. Her eyes scanned the entries frantically.
14:15 - Camera 04 (West Corridor) Manual Override: Disabled.
14:16 - Camera 08 (Conservatory Lawn) Manual Override: Loop Initiated.
Maya’s breath caught in her throat. The camera that would have captured Victoria tying the balloons to Chloe’s wrist hadn't just been turned off; it had been replaced with a pre-recorded loop of an empty lawn.
