Chapter 13 - The Fire in the Hearth

Silence fell over the cabin threshold, heavy, thick, and suffocating as the fog rolling off the sea.

Lily looked down at the cream-colored parchment envelope sitting on the table. She reached out her hand, her slender fingers brushing against the smooth, cold paper, feeling the raised impression of the red wax seal.

James stood three feet behind her, his finger holding steady on the shotgun trigger, his breathing slow, silent, and measured. He didn't speak. He didn't offer advice. He trusted her entirely.

Slowly, Lily picked up the envelope.

She walked away from the door, carrying the parchment over to the stone hearth, where the glowing red embers of the wood fire were casting a deep, warm heat into the room.

She looked into the glowing coals.

"My father built Vance Logistics with his own hands," Lily murmured, her voice echoing softly off the cedar beams. "He built it to feed people. To build ships. To create work for men like James."

She turned her head to look at her mother standing at the open doorway.

"You turned it into a slaughterhouse, Eleanor," Lily said quietly. "You traded human lives for line items on a balance sheet. You turned my brother into a monster, and you tried to erase me like a misspelled word."

Lily raised both hands.

With a swift, violent motion, she tore the heavy cream parchment envelope down the middle, ripping the title deeds, the signatures, and the forty-eight-million-dollar trust into two pieces.

She threw the pieces directly into the center of the glowing hearth fire.

The thick parchment caught fire instantly. Bright green and orange flames licked up the paper, curling the edges, blackening the red wax seal until it melted into ash atop the red coals.

Eleanor Vance’s face froze. Her hands tightened around the silver knob of her walking cane until her knuckles turned stark white.

"You foolish, sentimental girl," Eleanor spat, her voice dropping into a harsh, icy rasp. "You just burned your daughter's future."
