Chapter 8 - The Coastal Safehouse

Two hundred miles north of the city, the jagged granite cliffs of the Pacific Northwest dropped three hundred feet into the churning, cold grey surf of the ocean.

Perched on a rocky promontory surrounded by ancient, towering Douglas firs sat a modest, two-story wooden cabin built from dark cedar and fieldstone. A thin trail of white woodsmoke drifted from its stone chimney into the damp, pine-scented air.

It was three days after the events at the Grand Regent Hotel.

The sun was setting behind a heavy bank of purple clouds, casting a deep, golden-amber glow across the wide wooden porch that overlooked the crashing waves below.

Inside the cabin, a warm fire crackled in the stone hearth. The room smelled of fresh coffee, cedar shavings, and cinnamon tea.

Lily sat on a heavy plaid sofa near the fire, wrapped in a thick wool blanket. Her face was pale, but her eyes had lost the hollow, haunted look they had carried during her three years at Blackwood Sanitarium. She watched Maya, who was sitting on a braided rug near the hearth, carefully coloring a picture book with bright red and green crayons.

In the small adjoining kitchen, James was standing at a heavy oak table, cleaning a disassembled pump-action shotgun.

His dark fingers worked with calm, mechanical precision—wiping the steel barrel with an oiled rag, checking the firing pin, snapping the receiver back into place with a sharp, metallic CLICK.

Lily set her tea cup down on the wooden side table and walked slowly into the kitchen. Her soft cotton socks made no sound on the pine floorboards.

She stood behind James, wrapping her arms around his waist, pressing her cheek against his back, right between his shoulder blades.

"You don't need the gun tonight, James," Lily whispered softly, her eyes looking at the steel parts lying on the table. "Julian is in the federal holding cell in Seattle. Doctor Thorne is in custody. It's over."

James stopped his rag. He didn't turn around immediately. He laid the shotgun barrel down on the cloth, his hands hovering over the cold iron.

"Julian was just the executioner, Lily," James said quietly, his voice low and heavy as the mountain rocks outside. "He didn't have the brains or the capital to build a secret ward inside a state-run facility."

Lily’s body stiffened slightly against his back.

Slowly, she pulled her arms back and stepped around the table to face him. "What are you saying?"
