Chapter 14 - The Sovereign Dawn

"No," Lily said, stepping beside James, wrapping her fingers around his arm above the elbow, feeling the hard, steady muscle beneath his dark jacket. "I just bought her freedom."

Lily pointed her finger toward the fog-drenched porch.

"Get out of my house, Eleanor," Lily commanded, her voice ringing with an absolute, terrifying authority that made the elderly woman step back two inches into the cold night air. "If you ever come near this ridge... if you ever so much as look at my daughter through a pair of binoculars... James won't use a shotgun. I will hunt you down through every bank in Canada, and I will tear your empire down stone by stone until you have nowhere left to hide."

Eleanor stared at Lily for five long seconds.

For the first time in sixty years, the cold, invincible architect of Vance Logistics looked into eyes that were colder, harder, and far more dangerous than her own.

Eleanor didn't speak another word. She turned on her heel, her silver-topped cane tapping sharply against the cedar porch boards as she walked into the swirling white fog toward her idling black sedan.

The heavy luxury car door slammed shut. The engine purred softly, tires crunching over the wet gravel as the vehicle backed down the narrow dirt driveway, its red taillights slowly fading into the thick mist until they vanished entirely.

James stepped forward, pulled the heavy oak door shut, and slid the iron deadbolt back into place with a loud, final CLACK.

He set the pump-action shotgun down against the stone hearth, turned around, and pulled Lily into his arms.

He held her close, pressing his face into her hair, feeling her body heave with a single, deep shudder of released tension.

"It's over, Lily," James whispered softly into the dark room. "It's really over."
