Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Light

The morning sun broke through the Pacific fog at six o'clock, painting the sky in brilliant bands of gold, rose, and amber.
The ocean below the cliffs was calm, its dark blue surface catching the sunlight like a sheet of hammered steel. The pine trees smelled fresh, wet, and clean after the night storm.
On the front porch of the cedar cabin, Maya sat on a wooden bench, wearing her light blue dress under a heavy knitted cardigan. Her small white shoes dangled off the edge of the floorboards as she ate a warm slice of fresh apple pie from a small porcelain plate.
James sat beside her, his dark sleeves rolled up to his elbows, using a pocket knife to whittle a piece of cedar wood into the shape of a small toy sailboat.
The front door opened softly.
Lily stepped out onto the porch. She wore a simple cream wool sweater and dark denim trousers, her long brown hair hanging loose over her shoulders, blowing gently in the crisp ocean breeze.
She held two hot mugs of coffee in her hands.
She walked over, handed one mug to James, and sat down on the bench beside her daughter, pulling Maya gently against her side.
Maya looked up from her plate, her cheeks dusted with cinnamon crumbs, her brown eyes bright, clear, and filled with a deep, unbreakable peace.
"Mommy?" Maya asked, looking at the carved wooden boat in James’s hand.
"Yes, my sweet bird?" Lily asked, pressing a kiss onto her daughter's forehead.
"Will we ever go back to the big room with the glass lights?"
Lily looked out over the endless, shining expanse of the Pacific Ocean, where seagulls soared high in the clear morning sky, free and unburdened by shadows.

She smiled—a real, radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes.
"No, Maya," Lily whispered, her hand resting over James’s scarred knuckles on the wooden bench. "We're staying right here. Where the light belongs to us."
