Chapter 3 - The Reckoning

Arthur’s head snapped toward Julian, his eyes wide behind his dark sunglasses. "What? Listen here, old man, you don't know what's going on—"
Hector Vance didn't let him finish. Moving with a speed that belied his age, Hector closed the distance between them. He stepped directly into Arthur’s personal space, his looming presence forcing the muscular man to take an involuntary step backward until his back hit the side of a lift pillar.
Hector leaned in until his fedora almost touched Arthur's forehead. He removed his sunglasses with one swift motion, revealing pale, icy blue eyes that burned with a lethal intensity.
"You hit my son?" Hector whispered, each word carved out of ice. "You've just made the biggest mistake of your life."
Arthur blinked, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. "Your... your son? He's a mechanic! He works in this dump!"
"He works here because he chose to learn humility," Hector replied coldly, his jaw tightening. "Something your pathetic bloodline clearly lacks. You laid hands on an heir to the Vance dynasty. Do you have any idea what that means, Mr. Pendelton?"
Arthur froze. The name Vance hit him like a physical blow. The Vance Syndicate owned the very banks that held Arthur’s real estate loans. They owned the shipping lines, the political seats, the silent contracts that dictated who prospered and who vanished in this city. Clara hadn't fallen for a poor mechanic. She had stumbled into the hidden prince of an empire—and Arthur had just physically assaulted him.
"I... I didn't know," Arthur stammered, sweat breaking out across his bald head, glistening under the harsh lights. "He never said... Clara never said..."

"Because my son wanted to see if your daughter loved him for who he was, not what he commands," Hector said, his voice dropping an octave into a terrifying promise. "And now, I know exactly who you are."
Julian watched from the shadows of the tool rack, a microscopic smile touching the corner of his lips. The trap had been sprung. Arthur Pendelton thought he was protecting his daughter from a nobody, unaware that he had just handed the Vance family the exact leverage they needed to tear his life apart piece by piece.
