Chapter 2 - THE RECOGNITION

The hum of the ballroom began to recede into a dull, muffled thrum inside Eleanor’s ears. Her pulse drummed a desperate rhythm against her temples. Every logical thought screamed at her to maintain her composure, to stick to the plan, to wait for the private security detail to rotate at midnight before making her move. But logic is a fragile construction when confronted with the sight of your own flesh and blood sitting ten yards away, completely unaware that his life was built on a foundation of lies.
Leo set his silver glass onto a low glass table. He looked bored, his small shoulders slumping as Victoria ignored him to engage in an animated conversation about an upcoming art auction in London. The boy swung his legs back and forth, his blue suede dress shoes making soft, barely audible taps against the mahogany wood of the sofa frame.
Then, he stood up.
He slipped past the velvet ropes that demarcated the VIP lounge. Neither Victoria nor Julian noticed; Victoria was gesturing wildly with her champagne glass, and Julian had stepped aside to answer an encrypted satellite call on his phone.
Leo wandered toward a massive floral display set upon a bronze pedestal near the edge of the service corridor—the exact location where Eleanor stood. He stretched out his small hand, his little fingers reaching up to touch the heavy, cream-colored petals of a white hydrangea.
"Don't touch those, little master," a senior security guard murmured from five feet away, his tone sharp and devoid of warmth. "They're fragile."
Leo pulled his hand back quickly, flinching slightly at the harshness of the guard's voice. He stepped backward, his heel catching the raised metal rim of the floral display's heavy base.
The child lost his balance. His small frame tipped backward toward the unforgiving marble floor.
Eleanor didn't think. She didn't calculate the risk, nor did she consider the fifty cameras positioned throughout the room or the consequences of breaking the invisible barrier between staff and guest. The microfiber rag hit the floor.
She lunged forward, dropping to her knees in a single, fluid motion that defied her forty-two years.
Her arms extended out, catching the boy beneath his armpits a fraction of a second before his head could strike the stone floor. She pulled him fiercely into her chest, wrapping her arms around his small, velvet-clad body as she absorbed the impact on her knees.
"I have you," Eleanor breathed out, her voice breaking into a ragged, desperate whisper. "I have you, sweetheart. You're safe."
The child gasped, his little hands instantly clutching the coarse fabric of her light-blue maid uniform to stabilize himself. For a second, he stayed frozen against her chest, feeling the wild, thunderous beat of her heart through her clothes.
Then, Leo pulled back slightly to look at the person holding him.
The heavy, soft-focus background of the bustling ballroom seemed to dissolve into absolute nothingness. The camera of the universe narrowed into a tight, agonizingly intimate depth of field.
Leo stared directly into Eleanor’s face. His eyes traveled over her pale skin, the faint, faded scar running along her left brow, and finally locked onto her eyes. He saw the exact shade of clear sky blue that he looked at every morning in the bathroom mirror—a shade that existed nowhere else in the Sterling family tree.
A strange, unnatural tremor passed through the boy’s small frame. His eyes widened, not in fear, but in a sudden, overwhelming shock of subconscious recognition that defied explanation. The boredom on his face vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated awe.
Tears welled up instantly in Eleanor’s eyes, spilling over her lower lashes and tracing hot, wet paths down her pale, worn cheeks.
"Mummy?" Leo whispered.
May you like
The word was small, delicate, and weighed less than a feather, yet to Eleanor, it hit with the force of a detonating warhead.
"Mummy, you came back!" Leo cried out, his voice suddenly rising into a high, tearful sob that pierced through the ambient noise of the ballroom. He threw his arms tightly around Eleanor’s neck, burying his face into the side of her throat, gripping her hair with his tiny fingers. "I knew you would come back!"
