Chapter 3 - THE EMERALD ECLIPSE

Eleanor buried her face in the child’s golden hair, shutting her eyes tightly as a violent sob racked her chest. The scent of him—a mix of clean lavender baby soap, warm velvet, and the pure, sweet aroma of childhood—flooded her nostrils, shattering the five-year dam of grief she had held behind her ribs. She held him with a terrifying, crushing desperation, her worn hands pressing against his back, feeling the small, steady rhythm of his breathing.
She was no longer a maid. She was no longer a ghost hiding in the service corridors of the rich. She was a mother holding her lost child, and in that fleeting, five-second window, the rest of the world ceased to exist.
"How dare you touch my son!"
The voice arrived not as a spoken sentence, but as a razor-sharp shriek that sliced through the ballroom, freezing every conversation within a fifty-foot radius.
The ambient jazz music ceased almost instantly as the quartet faltered. Heads snapped around. Crystal glasses were lowered.
Victoria Sterling surged forward out of the VIP lounge, her emerald-green silk dress swishing violently against her legs like the skin of an angry viper. Her face was contorted into a grotesque mask of fury and disgust, her nostrils flared, her dark eyes flashing with unbridled rage. The pearl necklace at her throat bounced heavily against her chest as she marched down the two marble steps toward the service nook.
Behind her, the gathered socialites on the leather sofas gasped in orchestrated horror, pulling back their designer skirts as if a contagious disease had just broken out on the floor.
"Get your filthy, disgusting hands off him right now!" Victoria hissed, reaching out with her long, manicured red nails to snatch Leo by his upper arm.
Eleanor didn't let go immediately. Her maternal instinct flared into an aggressive, defensive fire. She tightened her grip slightly, shifting her weight to shield the boy with her own body.
"Leo!" Victoria barked, her voice echoing off the high ceilings as she yanked the child backward with ruthless, unyielding force. "Get behind me this instant! What is wrong with you?! Hugging a hotel maid?!"
Leo was violently torn from Eleanor’s arms. He stumbled backward, his shoe scuffing the floor, a small cry of pain escaping his lips as Victoria’s long nails dug into his thin arm through the velvet jacket. He ducked behind Victoria’s green skirt, his face pale, his clear blue eyes terrified as he looked back at Eleanor.
"Mummy, no!" Leo whimpered, his small hand clutching the silk fabric of Victoria’s dress. "She’s nice! She caught me!"
"Be quiet, Leo!" Victoria spat, not even looking down at the child. Her entire venomous focus was locked onto Eleanor, who remained kneeling on the cold stone floor, her blue dress rumpled, her face pale and streaked with fresh tears.
Victoria took a step forward, towering over the kneeling woman. She raised her right hand, her emerald and diamond rings catching the warm light, her fingers trembling with a psychotic, aristocratic outrage.

"You pathetic, low-class creature," Victoria sneered, her voice dropping into a dangerous, raspy whisper that carried to every waiting ear in the crowd. "You lay one finger on my child again, and I will have you thrown into a high-security prison before the sun comes up! Do you have any idea who I am? Do you have any idea who his father is?! You are a nothing! A parasite wiping down floors!"
Victoria pulled her hand back further, her chest heaving, fully intending to strike the kneeling maid across the face in front of two hundred high-society witnesses to re-establish her dominance.
