Chapter 7 - THE INTERROGATION AT 2 AM

The fluorescent lights of Manhattan Central Precinct’s third-floor interrogation room hummed with a sickly, buzzing frequency that made Eleanor’s teeth ache. The room smelled of burnt coffee, wet wool, and stale industrial disinfectant.
Eleanor sat at the metal table. The light-blue maid uniform had been covered by a heavy grey wool blanket provided by a young female officer who had looked at her with a mix of pity and awe.
Sitting beside her was Marcus Thorne—a legendary public interest attorney with silver hair and sharp, hawkish eyes, who had arrived at the precinct forty minutes after her arrest, claiming to represent an anonymous legal defense coalition.
On the other side of the glass mirror stood Detective Miller—a veteran investigator with dark bags under his eyes and a thick grey mustache that twitched every time he looked at the case file in his hands.
The door clicked open, and Miller stepped into the room, setting a thick yellow folder onto the steel table.
"The DNA results just came back from the state lab," Miller said, taking a seat across from them. His voice was heavy with exhaustion. "It's a ninety-nine point nine percent maternal match. You are the biological mother of Leo Sterling, Miss Vance."
Eleanor closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath that rattled in her chest. She pressed her face into her hands, her shoulders trembling as a single, quiet sob escaped her throat.
"What about Julian Sterling?" Marcus Thorne asked sharply, leaning forward, his pen poised over a yellow legal pad. "My client was the victim of an organized, high-level human trafficking conspiracy involving medical fraud, record falsification, and illegal detention."
Detective Miller leaned back in his chair, rubbing his bloodshot eyes. "That's where this whole thing turns upside down, counselor. Julian Sterling turned himself in an hour ago. He walked into the federal courthouse downtown with his legal team, thirty volumes of sealed financial ledgers, and a full, signed confession detailing Dr. Harrison’s illegal clinic operations."
Eleanor pulled her hands away from her face, her brows furrowed in intense confusion. "He turned himself in? Why? Why would a man like Julian destroy his own empire?"
Marcus Thorne didn't look surprised. He turned his hawkish gaze toward Eleanor, his eyes cold and analytical.
"Because Julian Sterling isn't playing defense, Miss Vance," Thorne said quietly. "Julian orchestrated tonight from the very beginning."
Eleanor froze, the cold blanket slipping slightly from her shoulders. "What are you talking about?"
"Julian’s marriage to Victoria was a corporate necessity," Thorne explained, tapping his pen against the table. "The Vance family—Victoria’s family—held fifty-one percent of the voting stock in Sterling Global. Under the terms of their prenuptial agreement, if Victoria produced a legitimate male heir, control of the company would permanently consolidate under Julian’s authority."
Thorne leaned closer, his voice dropping into a low, serious whisper.

"By exposing Victoria’s fraudulent motherhood in front of fifty high-society witnesses," Thorne continued, "and publicly revealing the illegal procurement of the child, Julian completely invalidated the Vance family's trust agreement. He didn't just expose a secret tonight, Eleanor... he stripped Victoria’s family of three billion dollars in corporate assets and ruined them permanently."
Eleanor felt a cold wave of horror wash over her. She realized with sickening clarity that she had not successfully infiltrated the Bellevue Grand by stealth. Julian had known she was there. He had allowed her to take the maid shift. He had used her maternal love as the ultimate weapon to execute a corporate slaughter.
