Chapter 12 - The Ash and the Dawn

When Lily saw her father approaching through the orange glow of the fire, she broke away from Maria's side and ran toward him as fast as her small legs could carry her.
Arthur dropped to his knees in the wet grass, opening his arms wide.
Lily threw herself into his embrace, burying her face into his neck, her small arms wrapping tightly around his shoulders. Arthur lifted her up, holding her close, feeling the steady, warm rhythm of her heart beating against his chest.
"Is she gone, Daddy?" Lily whispered into his ear, her voice trembling.
Arthur looked back over his shoulder toward the dark cliff edge, where the stormy sea continued its endless, violent assault against the rocks.
"Yes, baby," Arthur murmured softly, rubbing her back gently. "She's gone. She can't ever hurt you again."
Clara and Maria walked over, standing beside them in the warm glow of the dying fire. The youngest girl reached out, taking her father's hand, while Maria looked at him with an expression of deep, profound relief.

In the distance, down the winding coastal highway, the faint, rising wail of emergency sirens began to cut through the storm. Twin red and blue lights flickered through the heavy fog at the bottom of the hill, signaling the arrival of the police and fire departments.
The storm was finally beginning to break. To the east, over the black horizon of the ocean, the first faint pale blue light of dawn was beginning to bleed through the retreating storm clouds, washing away the oppressive darkness of the night.
