Chapter 6 - The Architecture of Deception

Arthur stared at her, his brows pulled down in sharp confusion. "What are you talking about? I opened my home to you! I gave you my name, my fortune, my trust!"

"You gave me a corpse's slippers," Eleanor countered, taking a slow step toward him through the rain. Her eyes were wide, unblinking, burning with an insane, cold obsession. "You brought me into this house, but every painting on these walls is of her. Every flower in the garden was her favorite. Even the perfume you bought me for our anniversary... it was the scent she wore before she crashed her car into the ravine."

Arthur’s chest heaved as he processed her words. "Julianna... my late wife... she was the mother of my children!"

"And I was supposed to be her ghost!" Eleanor shrieked, her calm demeanor finally fracturing, revealing the deep, dark madness lurking beneath her polished exterior. "You wanted me to dress like her! You wanted me to smile like her! You wanted me to raise her broken, pathetic little children while you sat in your study every night staring at her portrait!"

"That is not true!" Arthur roared.

"It is true!" Eleanor screamed back, stepping closer, her pale face inches from his in the blinding light of the headlights. "You didn't want a wife, Arthur! You wanted a nanny who looked like your dead love! But I am not Julianna! I will not be lived in by a dead woman's shadow!"

"Is that why you tried to destroy my daughter?!" Arthur demanded, his voice trembling with outrage. "Because she looks like her mother?! Because she carries her blood?!"

Eleanor smiled—a cold, terrifyingly twisted curving of her lips that made Arthur’s stomach churn.

"Lily is the link, Arthur," Eleanor whispered softly, her tone dropping into a chilling, conspiratorial murmur. "As long as that little girl breathes, as long as she walks through these halls with her mother's eyes and her mother's voice, you will never belong to me. You will always be trapped in the past."

"You're insane," Arthur whispered, taking a step back from her in genuine horror. "You're sick."

"I am the only sane person in this house!" Eleanor yelled, her arms sweeping out to encompass the grand, dark mansion behind him. "And tonight, Arthur... tonight I am going to burn the memory of Julianna out of your heart forever."
