Chapter 14 - The Clearing of the Fog

By noon, the rain had stopped completely.
The sun shone brightly down from a clear, washed-blue sky, reflecting off the damp green grass and the sparkling, calm surface of the Atlantic Ocean below. The air smelled crisp, clean, washed free of fire and soot.
Arthur stood near his car, watching the tow truck pull his vehicle out of the gravel driveway. The insurance adjusters and state investigators were wrapping up their work, leaving the silent stone shell of Blackwood Manor behind.
Maria walked up to him, carrying a small travel bag containing the few items that had been saved from the lower service quarters.
"Mr. Pendelton," Maria said quietly, her face still bruised, but her eyes steady and clear. "I wanted to let you know... I'll be taking Clara and Lily to my sister's house in the valley for the weekend, as we discussed. They will be safe there while you handle the arrangements."
Arthur looked at the brave young woman who had risked her life to protect his children. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out his wallet, and handed her a thick stack of folded bills and a spare car key.
"Thank you, Maria," Arthur said, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "For everything. You saved my girls' lives last night. I will never forget that."
Maria smiled warmly, taking the key. "They are good children, sir. They deserve a happy life. And so do you."
She walked over to the police vehicle, helping Lily and Clara transfer into her small sedan. Before getting into the back seat, Lily turned around and ran back across the grass to her father.
She threw her small arms around his waist, pressing her face against his hip.
"I love you, Daddy," she whispered.
Arthur leaned down, pulling her into a tight, warm hug. "I love you too, my sweet girl. More than anything in this world."
"Are we ever coming back here?" Lily asked, looking up at the blackened stone archway of the ruined mansion.
May you like
Arthur looked at the ruins one last time, then turned his back on them entirely, facing his daughter with a calm, peaceful smile.
"No, Lily," Arthur said firmly. "We are never coming back."
