Chapter 4 - The Descent into the Abyss

A wave of freezing, subterranean air rushed up from the dark, carrying with it the heavy stench of damp earth, sea rot, and old iron.

Arthur didn't wait for a flashlight. He plunged down the steep, narrow flight of stone steps into the absolute blackness of the vault.

The steps were slick with moss and salt condensation. Halfway down, his foot slipped, and he went down hard on his right knee, the sharp stone bruising his bone through his trousers. He paid no attention to the pain. He scrambled back to his feet, feeling his way along the rough granite walls until his hands touched the cold floor of the lower chamber.

"Lily!"

"Daddy!"

In the far corner of the vault, huddled beneath a massive wooden wine rack that dripped with moisture, was a tiny, shaking ball of pink fabric.

Lily was curled into a tight fetal position, her knees pulled up to her chest, her small hands wrapped tightly over her ears as if trying to block out the darkness itself. Her face was pale as chalk, smeared with tears and soot, her big brown eyes dilated so wide with terror that they appeared almost completely black in the dim light filtering down from the doorway above.

Arthur dropped to his knees, scooping her up into his arms with a desperate, frantic strength.

He pulled her small, shivering body flush against his chest, tucking her head beneath his chin, wrapping his wet wool suit jacket completely around her to shield her from the freezing dampness of the room.

"I've got you, baby," Arthur sobbed, his own tears finally breaking free, hot against his cold cheeks. He buried his face in her soft, dark hair, kissing the top of her head over and over again. "I've got you. Daddy's here. You're safe. You're safe, I promise you."

Lily clung to his neck with a terrifying, iron grip. Her small frame was shaking so violently that her teeth were audibly chattering against his collarbone. She didn't speak; she only gasped for air in short, ragged, hyperventilating gulps, her little fingers digging into the fabric of his suit as if terrified that if she let go for a single second, the darkness would swallow her whole.

Behind them, the sound of quick, trembling footsteps descended the stone stairs.

Maria appeared in the doorway, holding a flickering brass oil lamp in her shaking hand. The yellow light cast long, dancing shadows across the ancient stone walls, revealing the true horror of the space—a tiny, windowless cell where the sea was visible through thin cracks in the floorboards, churning violently thirty feet below.

Maria wept softly, putting her hand over her mouth as she saw the state of the child. "Oh God, Mr. Pendelton... is she alright?"

"She's alive," Arthur growled, standing up slowly while cradling Lily securely in his arms. The child weighed almost nothing, her small head resting limply against his shoulder, exhausted from pure psychological shock.

He looked at Maria, his eyes cold, dark, and filled with a lethal clarity. "Take Clara and Lily to the master bedroom on the second floor. Lock the door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me. Do you understand?"

Maria nodded frantically, her cheeks still wet with tears. "Yes, sir. Right away, sir."

Arthur handed the shivering girl over to the maid. Lily whimpered briefly, reaching out for her father, but Arthur pressed his forehead against hers one last time.

"Go with Maria, baby," he whispered softly, his tone shifting back to gentle warmth for a split second. "Daddy has to finish something."
