Chapter 1 - THE MARBLE HALLWAY

The grand foyer of the Blackwood Manor smelled of crushed white lilies, expensive beeswax polish, and the metallic tang of fresh blood.
James stood under the towering crystal chandelier, his navy blue bespoke tux pristine, every line tailored to project authority, grace, and grief. His hands, adorned with a solid platinum signet ring, trembled slightly as he knelt before eight-year-old Maya. The girl looked like a porcelain doll in her light blue tulle dress, her curly blonde hair framing a face pale with confusion.
The polished white marble floor beneath them reflected the brilliant warm glow of the chandelier, turning the vast entrance hall into a gleaming sea of light and shadows. High above, the vaulted ceiling seemed to absorb the quiet whispers of the grand estate.
"Listen to me, Maya," James said, his voice dropping into that smooth, comforting baritone he had rehearsed a thousand times. He reached out to gently clasp her small shoulders. "Everything is going to be alright. You don't have to be afraid anymore."
Before Maya could answer, the heavy double doors at the front of the estate didn't just open—they burst inward with a explosive crack.
A figure blurred across the marble floor. It was Marcus. He wore a heavy brown leather jacket, dark jeans, and eyes burning with an unholy, feral rage. He didn't speak. He didn't demand answers.
Marcus slammed his weight forward, his right fist whistling through the quiet air. The impact was sickening—a wet, crunching blow straight to James’s jaw.
The force lifted James off his feet. His polished shoes skidded uselessly against the slick marble as he crashed violently onto his side. Pain exploded across his face, hot and blinding, white sparks bursting behind his eyes. His head bounced off the marble floor with a dull thud, and for a terrifying second, the chandelier above spun into a blur of blinding white light.
Maya screamed, a high-pitched, piercing sound that shattered the quiet atmosphere of the manor.
Marcus dropped to one knee, immediately wrapping his thick arms around the terrified child. He pulled her flush against his leather jacket, shielding her from the sight of James groaning on the floor.
"I've got you, baby. I've got you," Marcus breathed, his voice ragged, his breathing coming in heavy, violent gasps. He stroked her hair with a trembling hand, his eyes never leaving the body of the man sprawled on the stone.
Maya buried her face in Marcus’s collar, her small frame shaking violently with convulsive sobs. She pulled back just enough to look into Marcus's eyes, her tears cutting shiny tracks down her pale, powder-dusted cheeks.
She whispered a sentence that turned the room's temperature to ice:
"Daddy says mommy is gone."
The words hung in the vast hall, heavy, malformed, and terrifying.
James groaned, coughing as blood pooled in his mouth, metallic and salty. He pushed his palms against the freezing marble, his muscles straining as he forced his bruised body off the floor. His Navy blue suit was scuffed, his tie crooked, but his eyes flared with a desperate, wild fury.
"No sweetheart!" James screamed, his damaged voice echoing off the high plaster walls as he dragged himself up onto his knees. "Your mother is alive!"
Marcus didn't hesitate. He stood up in one fluid, aggressive motion, stepped over Maya, and delivered a backhand slap so violent it sounded like a gunshot.
"James, stop lying!" Marcus roared.
The blow snapped James’s head back, sending him crashing flat onto his back once more. Blood sprayed across the stark white floor in a delicate arc of crimson dots. James lay there, panting, his vision swimming, his jaw feeling completely shattered.
Then, a sudden, heavy silence fell over the manor.
The massive double doors at the end of the hall swung fully open, guided by the cold evening draft. A tall, slender woman stood framed in the threshold, backed by the dramatic, misty twilight. She wore an elegant beige trench coat, her dark hair sweeping around her shoulders, her silhouette sharp against the fading light outside.
Maya froze, her sobs cutting off instantly. Her small head turned slowly toward the door.
"Mommy?" Maya whispered, her voice fragile as glass.

James, struggling through the haze of agony, turned his bloodied face toward the entrance. His eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing shock. His breath hitched in his chest, a strangled gasp tearing from his throat.
"Lily..." James choked out.
