Chapter 12 - THE DEEP CORE

The air inside the underground bunker was cold, dry, and tasted faintly of ancient copper and machine oil.

Lily flipped a heavy knife-switch mounted to the concrete wall. A row of low-wattage yellow emergency lights flickered to life along the ceiling, casting long, dim corridors ahead of them into stark relief.

"They'll find the floor seam eventually," Marcus said, his breathing coming in heavy, ragged gasps as he looked up at the reinforced concrete ceiling above.

"It will take Vance's team at least three hours to drill through eight inches of hardened Swedish steel," Lily replied, walking briskly down the narrow concrete corridor. "And by then, the signal will already be sent."

They reached a massive circular room dominated by a bank of vintage 1980s mainframe computers, their green CRT monitors glowing softly in the dark. In the center of the room sat a single steel terminal desk with an analog phone handset, a heavy brass keyhole, and a high-resolution flat-screen monitor that James had installed recently.

Lily walked to the terminal, plugged her silver USB drive into the console, and turned the brass key embedded in the desk.

The green CRT monitors flickered violently, lines of code scrolling down their screens at blinding speed:

SYSTEM OVERRIDE INITIATED...

CLEARANCE: VANE_MASTER_01

PRIMARY ARCHIVE: UNLOCKED.

Marcus stepped up beside her, staring at the screen. "What is all this data, Lily?"

"This isn't just money or shipping logs, Marcus," Lily said, her eyes reflected in the green glow of the terminal. "This is the complete architectural blueprints for every major government facility, energy grid, and military bunker built in Northern Europe over the last forty years. My father’s firm designed them all."

"And James was selling these to Vance?"

"James was selling the access codes," Lily corrected softly. "Vance’s organization in Riga wasn't interested in committing crimes. They were selling the blueprints to foreign intelligence agencies. James was turning Europe’s entire defensive infrastructure into a commercial product."

On the main monitor, a red warning box began to flash:

EXTERNAL COMPROMISE DETECTED // SECTOR 1 FOYER.

THERMIC CUTTING INITIATED.

A live camera feed in the upper corner of the screen showed Dr. Vance standing in the grand foyer above, wearing protective goggles while two of his tactical operatives used a high-temperature thermite lance to melt through the marble floor seam. Sparks rained across the pristine white floor, turning the elegant hall into a blinding furnace.

"They're burning through," Marcus said, his hand tightening around his tire iron.

Lily didn't panic. She reached under the terminal desk, pulled up a small glass safety cover, and exposed a bright red button labeled: PURGE // BROADCAST.

"If I press this," Lily said, looking up at Marcus, "every blueprint, every code, every piece of evidence linking James, Vance, and their corporate buyers will be uploaded simultaneously to the security services of twelve NATO nations."

"And what happens to the estate?" Marcus asked.

"The server core is wired to a secondary thermite charge beneath this floor," Lily said calmly. "It will incinerate the entire subterranean complex in three minutes. There will be nothing left for Vance to salvage."

Marcus looked into her eyes, seeing no fear, no hesitation—only the fierce, protective flame of a mother who had burned her own life to ashes to ensure her child's future.

"Do it," Marcus said.

Lily pressed the red button.
