Chapter 6 - ASHES AND SECRETS

The dry birch logs in the hearth caught the flame instantly, popping and crackling as orange fire licked up the dark chimney.
Lily stood before the fire, holding the silver cassette tape over the rising heat. Marcus watched her, every muscle in his body tense, his hands flexed at his sides like a man ready to lunge across a chasm.
"Lily, please," Marcus whispered. "That tape contains the only link between me and the Gothenburg shipping fire. If the authorities get their hands on it, I'll spend the rest of my life in a federal penitentiary."
Lily looked at the silver cassette, then back at Marcus.
"You helped me tonight," she said quietly. "You took his blow. You protected Maya. But you didn't do it out of love, Marcus. You did it because James was going to use this tape against you during his trial to trade for a reduced sentence."
"That doesn't mean I don't care about you!" Marcus snapped, taking another frantic step forward.
"Stop," Lily commanded, her voice dropping into an icy register that made Marcus freeze in his tracks.
She opened her hand. The silver cassette tape dropped straight into the center of the roaring fire.
The plastic shell warped instantly under the intense heat, melting into a black, sticky mass. The delicate magnetic tape inside curled, sparked, and burst into bright blue flames, dissolving into useless ash within seconds.
Marcus let out a long, ragged breath, his shoulders dropping as the weight of a decade-long blackmail threat evaporated into the chimney air.
"Thank you," Marcus rasped, wiping his forehead with the back of his hand.
"Don't thank me yet," Lily said, turning around to face him fully.
She picked up one of the black-bound ledgers from the desk and threw it onto the floor at his feet.
"What is this?" Marcus asked, staring at the leather book.
"That is the record of the offshore accounts James set up in your name three years ago," Lily said, her eyes dark and unwavering. "He used your identity to funnel forty million Kroner out of the Vane estate while I was away. Legally, Marcus, you are now the primary shareholder of the shell corporation that owns the Gothenburg docks."
Marcus's face went entirely white. "What? No... I never signed anything!"
"He forged your signature using the Gothenburg documents," Lily said, taking a step toward him. "Which means, as far as the Norwegian tax authorities and Interpol are concerned, you aren't the victim here. You're James’s primary co-conspirator."
Marcus looked from the ledger on the floor to the fire where his exoneration tape had just burned to ash. The horrifying realization struck him like a physical blow: by burning the tape, Lily hadn't saved him—she had destroyed his only proof that James was acting alone.

"You... you set me up," Marcus whispered, his voice shaking with absolute disbelief.
"I didn't set you up, Marcus," Lily said coldly, walking past him toward the door where Maya was waiting. "James set you up years ago. I just let the fire burn the parts that didn't belong to me."
