Chapter 8 - THE POISONED PROTOCOL

The emergency ward at Ullevål Hospital was bright, smelling aggressively of antiseptic, rubbing alcohol, and ozone.
Lily walked down the long, linoleum-tiled corridor, her beige trench coat buttoned tight to her chin. Marcus walked a step behind her, his eyes darting toward the two uniformed police officers posted outside Room 408.
Detective Berg stood near the nurses' station, holding a clear plastic evidence bag containing a small, empty glass ampoule.
"He collapsed in the booking room twenty minutes after arrival," Berg said as Lily approached. "The preliminary toxicology screen found traces of a high-potency organophosphate compound."
"A suicide pill?" Marcus asked, leaning in.
"That's the strange part," Berg replied, holding up the plastic evidence bag to the bright fluorescent lights. "The ampoule was hidden inside the hollow lining of his bespoke tuxedo collar. But the glass wasn't crushed by his teeth. It was designed to slowly dissolve when exposed to high body heat and friction—like the friction created during a violent physical struggle."
Lily’s eyes narrowed as she stared at the tiny glass vessel inside the plastic bag.
Memory rushed back to her with terrifying clarity: the marble hall, the sudden entrance, Marcus's violent lunge, the heavy punch that sent James crashing onto his side, and then the backhand slap that pinned him to the floor.
"The struggle," Lily murmured, her voice turning cold as ice. "It wasn't a fight. It was a delivery system."
She turned around sharply to face Marcus.
Marcus backed away half a step, raising his hands instantly. "Lily, wait! You don't think I—"
"You hit him twice," Lily said, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper that didn't carry down the quiet hospital hall. "You hit him once in the jaw, and then you slapped him across the neck. Right where his tuxedo collar met his jawline."
"I punched him because I hated him!" Marcus hissed, his eyes wide with genuine panic. "I didn't put a poison ampoule in his collar! How could I even know he was wearing that suit tonight?!"
"Because you were the one who ordered the tuxedo for him from the tailors in Savile Row three weeks ago," Lily said, her mind connecting the dots with horrifying speed. "You paid the invoice from the Gothenburg holding account."
Detective Berg looked between the two of them, her hand instinctively dropping toward the leather holster at her belt. "Mrs. Vane, what are you saying?"
Before Lily could answer, the electronic double doors at the end of the hospital corridor slid open.
A tall man in a dark gray wool coat walked into the ward. He had neatly combed silver hair, gold-rimmed spectacles, and carried a leather medical briefcase. His presence was calm, authoritative, and completely out of place for three in the morning.
"Detective Berg," the silver-haired man said, his voice smooth as silk as he pulled an official document from his coat. "I am Dr. Henrik Vance, chief medical examiner for the Ministry of Justice. I am taking immediate custody of the patient in Room 408 under National Security Directive 12."
Lily stared at the man. She recognized his face instantly from a photograph she had found in her father's private vault six years ago.

He wasn't a medical examiner. He was the primary shareholder of the Riga corporate intelligence network—the firm James had been selling her father's architectural encryption codes to all along.
And he had just walked into the hospital to finish what the poison started.
